While all those juicy Canadian money jokes are sadly behind us, the dropping US dollar does have one nice side effect, at least for those pesky squatters north of the border. That's right, Canadians are finally getting an Xbox 360 pricing scheme on par with us Americans, with the 360 Pro dropping from $399 to $349, the Elite dropping from $499 to $449, and the Arcade slouching from $299 down to $279. If it weren't for the fact that this price drop is long overdue and the exchange rate still has 'em forking over $5 extra, we'd almost be jealous of those hosers up north.
Microsoft just trimmed 13% of the price from its Xbox 360 console in Japan. The move comes on the heels of Sony's own PS3 slash and bare-bones 40GB PS3 console launch -- a move resulting in a dramatic uptick in sales for Sony. Nintendo Wii pricing has thus far remained unchanged for the holiday season. While we'd love for Microsoft to extend the discounts to the rest of the world -- we doubt they'll do so. This move is meant to shore up demand in Japan where Xbox 360 sales struggle against the homegrown Wii and PS3. Of course, we're more than happy to be proven wrong.
Demanding a cool two grand for the FlipStart was probably asking a bit much, but whacking 25-percent off the purchase price is probably a good way to get folks looking in that direction once again. Effectively immediately, the "FlipStart super compact PC will be available for $1,499," and while none of the specs have changed, it's definitely (well, somewhat) easier to stomach the pricetag. Of course, it remains to be seen if $1.5k is still a bit overpriced, but hey, it's a start, right?
Well folks, it looks like the funky, PS3 price-drop happenings you've been hearing about lately may very well be dropping all over the place. Apparently, hot on the heels of a new filing with the FCC, and various rumors concerning an approaching $399 console, Sony (which has heretofore denied the chatter) has announced a "Big Bang" press conference to take place on October 12th, where many believe they will intro a new, lower priced 40GB console. With nothing big slated for the holiday season yet, and Xbox 360 price-cuts and bundles being bandied about, it makes sense that Sony would come out swinging before holiday shoppers hit the stores. It's truly a good time to be a buyer.
Rather than simply suing Apple, Steve Jobs or AT&T individually, Dongmei Li decided to throw all three under the bus. The suit, which was reportedly filed this week in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, accused the trio of "price discrimination, underselling, discrimination in rebates, deceptive actions and other wrongdoings for their role in the September 5th price drop on the iPhone." As you'd expect, Li was one of the folks who waited hours on end to be one of the first iPhone owners, and apparently feels quite slighted by the slashing. Purportedly, the plaintiff is hoping to secure "compensatory damages in the amount of $1 million" in addition to other punitive damages, and if you're up for a good laugh, hit the read link to browse through quite a few (more) comical gripes.
For those keeping a close eye on the pricing drama surrounding Sony's PlayStation 3, you've no doubt heard the whispers suggesting that the firm may slash the price of its (comparatively) expensive console to better compete with those other guys. Apparently, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has informed GamesIndustry that the recent talk of such cuts -- particularly the ones pointing to a pared-down £299 ($602) model in the UK -- is nothing more than "rumor and speculation." 'Course, Sony has been known to give out those non-denial denials a time or two before, so we wouldn't be floored to see a few pounds shaved off in the not-too-distant future.
