I thought significant other was a term used instead of husband or wife because just because you're male doesn't mean your "life partner" is a woman.
Not everybody wants to get married to their partner, and not everybody can. ;) So "SO" is usually more appropriate for generalisms, such as here, or when you're not sure if a couple has "tied the knot" or not.
