Boy hires hitman to kill parents after grounding denies PlayStation, TV
We've certainly gotten cranky after being denied some quality gaming time, but 16-year-old Cory Ryder took it to the next level by attempting to hire a hitman to kill his parents after they took away his PlayStation and denied him television. Seems young Cory had been making threats around the house, so his mom hired a cop to pose as a hitter -- and Cory took the bait, offering up his dad's truck as payment. After a couple rounds of "negotiations," the officer revealed himself and arrested Cory for attempted murder, for which he's now awaiting trial. Of course, you'd think that having a hitman conveniently show up after you'd been threatening to kill your parents might set off an alarm or two, but Cory's apparently not the brightest bulb around -- his PlayStation was confiscated due to failing grades.[Via Joystiq]

Dumbass.
ejordan @ Nov 5th 2007 9:50PM
When will people learn? Hasn't he played Hitman? 47 never negotiates with the individuals. No, takes orders from the Agency. CALL THE AGENCY, not the undercover.. geez

mitch r was saying about the boy... he didnt call you ;)
JDizzle @ Nov 5th 2007 10:24PM
Jack Thompson to the rescue! Blame games for his temper and attempted
murder, and "forget" the fact that he had failing grades and that he was a
complete and utter dumb ass.
Jagannath A @ Nov 6th 2007 6:21AM
sorry for behaving like an idiot :(
Electromodo @ Nov 6th 2007 10:36AM
As much as the boy deserves criminal charges for the attempt to kill his parents, HIS PARENTS deserve social obstruction for setting a trap for their own child and hiring a policeman for that.
I don't know, the boy might be a natural born criminal, the psycho or just dumbass and we are lucky he was caught so early. But it does not excuse his parents for setting him in a trap.

knowing engadgt, thwy would have shown the cover to the apple version of hitman. OH wait, apple cant play games. oops.
bjrcboy @ Nov 5th 2007 10:50PM
Have you been into an apple store lately? they actually have a section for games you douche. Apple can play games but not many developers code games for OS X. Which is starting to change dramatically.

Oh noes! All Engadget ever does is talk about Apple! Steve Jobs killed my puppy! Apple is the antichrist! Please, will it ever end?
Oh, thank god, an article that has nothing to do with Apple. Hmm, I think I'll find a tortured way to bring it up anyway!
wanker.
Sunny @ Nov 5th 2007 11:28PM
Now we have a post with comments where "Apple" being mentioned... You suck ups, you can't think outside Apple. Can you?
Scooter @ Nov 6th 2007 7:02AM
So instead of failing grades he is now in the slammer? All thanks to Mom (who probably bought the console in the first place). Defines "dysfunctional family".
Comacozi @ Nov 6th 2007 8:30AM
awwww i was flamed
Lemmiwinks @ Nov 6th 2007 12:17PM
Tell you what, Scooter. How about *you* take the little bastard under your wing for a couple years.
Are you seriously criticizing these parents for actually doing something about their demon-spawn?
uberfu @ Nov 6th 2007 2:17PM
@Lemmiwinks -
Uh - what prompted him to become a demon spawn in the first place?
Of Course - it was the video games he played and had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with how his parents raised him for it to get to the level that developed_
Lemmiwinks @ Nov 6th 2007 4:40PM
@ uberfu
Pleez don'na be putting werds in mi mowth. Scooter's the one who said that the mom probably bought the kid the PS in the first place.
Some kids are shit-heads, regardless of how they were raised. It's been quite a while since I was a teenager, but I clearly remember perfectly respectable family friends whose military-school-fodder kids I wasn't allowed to hang out with. Many factors often contribute to the deliquency of a malcontent.
I make no assumptions about the kid's upbringing (though reading all three pages of the actual article does paint a clearer picture). I only applaud the gumption of this mother to take a stand against this nit-wit. She followed through on the punishment of her own flesh and blood, who had resorted sending her "I love you" letters from prison. Regardless of what got brought them to this point, the right choices are being made *now* and that deserves acknowledgment, if not praise.
Lemmiwinks @ Nov 6th 2007 4:44PM
...and boy oh boy did my grammar *suck* in that last comment...

JAmerican @ Nov 5th 2007 9:48PM
This is true sadly. We have one of the highest murder rates compared to other countries.
yoshi @ Nov 5th 2007 10:17PM
Oh really? What, exactly, is the United States murder rate? Hmmm, I'm guessing you don't actually know and just are respewing the garbage you hear on the nightly news. A simple Google search will bring up this:
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur_percap-crime-murders-per-capita
So, to quote someone above me, "suck it!"
:)
David W. @ Nov 5th 2007 10:28PM
and what nationality are you?...if you aren't French then I have nothing against you...so why is it you have something against me as an American?
Isaac @ Nov 5th 2007 10:25PM
Actually, thats a crappy spot. We have a high rate of murder among developed nations. But I live in NYC with a crime rate lower than the national average so I don't really give a damn.
ReverendGadgetBoy @ Nov 5th 2007 10:25PM
@yoshi:
Your link actually supports JAmerican's point. We are #24 out of the 62 on the list, definitely putting us toward the top. Also, we have more murders than every one of the First World, "civilized" countries. This is a problem that cannot be ignored.
;)
Southerner @ Nov 5th 2007 10:31PM
Amuuurica roooocks!!!
Stefan @ Nov 5th 2007 10:40PM

# 24 is NOT a good thing... you are an idiot
as others have already said, we are much higher than any other first world nation which is pretty sad.
and i hate to say it being an american, but mcheddadi's comment isnt that far off.... compared to other countries of our status.
Temple @ Nov 5th 2007 10:44PM
@ yoshi
that statistic you linked to isn't much to brag about. We Americans have the highest murder rate of any developed country, can't really brag about having lower murder rates then Moldavia, Columbia, Zambia, Papua New Guinea. Even Azerbaijan, Amenia, and Yemen have lower murder rates then us.

Hey nimrod;
Try strolling around South Africa (my home country) or Italy with your girl-friend for a few nights - see what happens.
Violence, murder, carjackings and rape are the norms over here.
We don't see too many folks trying to get into our country. I'd sell my left arm for a chance to live in the USA.
Goatee Man @ Nov 5th 2007 11:16PM
@ mcheddadi:
You're reading an _American_ blog via the Internet, which is also an _American_ creation. Using Windows? American. A Mac? American. Linux? Yeah, Linus is American, too. Y'know that phone you use? We invented it. Wear jeans? We came up with that, too.
I think it was Tony Blair who once said "The best way to judge the state of a country is by looking at how many people want in, and how many people want out." If that's true, we're doing pretty darn well.
So feel free to cram it up your dickhole.
Goatee Man @ Nov 5th 2007 11:22PM
And yes, I am aware that Linus Torvalds was born in Finland. However, he now resides in Oregon, and the majority of his work with Linux was done in the US.
So there.

"Seventh United Nations Survey of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems, covering the period 1998 - 2000 (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Centre for International Crime Prevention)"
so in other words your taking data from 7 years ago to make a point.. thats like saying in 1998 hp was the best selling pc in the world (i dont actually know, just making a point), ya thats what the numbers said in 98 but wtf does that have to do with today.. point is that statistics change year by year.. we could be worse, we could be better...
the part out of that list that scares me is that out of 65 we were 1st with 89,110 rapes.. that is just sad...
Andrew @ Nov 6th 2007 12:15PM
@Goatee Man
The web was invented in Europe at the pan-European CERN laboratories by Tim Berners-Lee from the UK. So the "Internet" we're reading this on is actually *not* American.
JHosche @ Nov 6th 2007 12:39PM
@Andrew
The web was invented at CERN...but the Internet was invented by DARPA (in the US) in 1973 (google "history of Internet and Transmission Protocols" - they were created in 1973, published in 1974 and fully rolled out in 1983)
Or the obvious answer...Al Gore invented the Internet :)
Steve @ Nov 6th 2007 2:13PM
@yoshi,
From the same website shows U.S. head and shoulders above other countries in terms of rape per capita.
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_rap-crime-rapes
sam @ Nov 6th 2007 3:29PM
@Steve - It is unlikely that United States has a higher rate of rape per capita. It it for more likely that the United states simply has a higher rate of rape victims reporting it.
Since authorities in many other countries won't care, won't do anything about it, and might just join in.

Yagami-Iori @ Nov 5th 2007 10:06PM
He would have an entrapment defense if it wasn't for him already threatening his parents. By doing so, it shows that he had the intent to do something like this & was more action by his parents to defend themselves. And given how short this story is, I bet there is MUCH more behind this story & this kid's past.

Sean @ Nov 6th 2007 6:04PM
Wow, either this kid was really scary or these parents are real harsh. Usually you get someone to trick a family member or friend to teach a lesson - not to get them arrested! Kudos to the parents for it though! What a dumb kid.
lyl545646 @ Nov 5th 2007 9:48PM
seriously?... that kid needs some serious psychological therapies... seriously!
Grant @ Nov 6th 2007 3:03AM
i dunno,
somethings not right with this kid, but i am also a believer in the fact that no matter how much therapy/meds you give someone, a douche is still a douche.
and this kid definitely has a monopoly on assbaggery.

Great, now I've got "Frontier Psychiatrist" by The Avalanches stuck in my head.
That boy needs therapy!
macona @ Nov 6th 2007 3:28PM
I think a therapeutic dose of cyanide would solve his murderous tendancies.
Bill @ Nov 5th 2007 9:48PM
Way to spin it Engadget. Yes, he had his Playstation confiscated, but from the article it seems the reasons behind the hiring stems way beyond that fact.
