PSP hooked up to third party GPS receivers
Using nothing more than a little fine soldering, it is possible to get your PSP to accept the data output from 3rd party GPS receivers from Holux, among others. Like a lot of past PSP mods, this probably isn't one for mere mortals: you'll have to have a heavy dosing of leet skill to pull this one off, and be able to understand the gobbledegook that the custom executable throws up -- although it will apparently work with Map This, a third party GPS and Map app for the PSP. Nevertheless, it's all there on the read link, so check it out if you dare.

...And then what? Waste of time. Standalone GPS systems go as low as $169.99, like the Mio C220, and function a lot better.
What l33t skills do you need exactly, beyond buying the cable and installing the app.?
You need to be able to use words such as "l33t" in everyday conversations!
If you aren't l33t, you just aren't cool.
...or Garmin's Legend CX. But with Navteq probably tying the knot with Nokia, the software/firmware for these things probably wont be appearing on anyone else's GPS units anytime soon. Not sure who else makes the stuff but Navteq is the best.
The last time someone told me how cool their PSP was for net browsing I told them to get lost, so this may be a useful tool.
This is a pretty old mod...been around for a while.
I rather use [and do] the Sony GPS reciever and Mapthis...cheaper and less work to be done.
Yeah, this mod is ancient. Im surprised engadget is even reporting on it at this point.
Why, according to these lines of code...we're back at Gamestop!
Remarkable.
well.. This is not big deal! But I congrats the guy who did this! (0_^)
Spell check time. "I" before "E," except after "C."
Aha! I always am trying to remember that rule, the damn C is what I forgot.
this gps hack for psps has been around for at least a year or two now.
Must be a slow news day...
Yep been out for a while....
Been known since the slim came out that it still had Serial I/O even if the iR was droped.
Now if they had a cheep cable that fits the slim you could buy... A 2way iR - Serial I/O adapter. Or just a keyboard... Would be news.
This is a zilch.
I would have much rather seen a PSP modded with a 150GB HD, which is what the PSP SHOULD have instead of the stupid UMD drive that is slow and requires expensive cartridge games.
It's looking scary with the command logs printed like that :P it looks like a real computer (which it is, but we too conveniently forget about this under the guise of the candy game graphics).
Jesus guys, look at what computers have become. Cameraphones, PDA-s and gaming multimedia devices.
I wonder how this will look like in 10 years.
This was done to the DS a looooooong time ago. Natrium 42 is a god!
