DIY'er puts the Wiimote on your Xbox 360
We've seen some pretty wild Wiimote mods in our day, but this control rig for the Xbox 360 definitely springs into the upper echelons of Wii-hackdom. This particular DIY effort involves a rather varied list of components, including a Wiimote and Nunchuk (obviously), an Xbox 360, a PC (in this case the Samsung Q1), a MagicBox XFPS, custom drivers, and a "black box" consisting of a hard coded microcontroller and spliced PS2 cable. Just a few things to get the job done. And the end result? A fully compatible, reticule-smoothing, Halo 2-ready Wii control system for your Microsoft gaming rig. Don't believe the hype? Hit the video after the break to see what it's all about.

ZOMG pwnage.
I like the smart usage of the limited buttons, which shows some of the possibilities for Wii FPS's.
Oh yeah... 1st!

Now this is "wii interoperability". Lol!
brad @ Aug 7th 2007 12:35PM
but can it play doom?
yes...yes it can!
Andir3.0 @ Aug 7th 2007 12:52PM
I read the title and thought... Are they trying to melt the controller?
Kryptinite @ Aug 7th 2007 12:52PM
That takes way too long to setup but it looks amazing. Hopefully MP3 is a good adaptation of the Wii Controls or else I'm going to sell my Wii.

Wow, that is incredible. It takes a lot of talent, and time, to get this done. Congratulations to the person on the video. It really brings more life into the video game playing experience.

I want one! *Runs to store buys xbox*

Don't forget your MagicBox XFPS, the stuff from Radio Shack, the programming micro-controllers book, and some spare time.

Overall, awesome. The only thing that detracts from the experience was the A button press and release dance you have to go through to turn. To me I think it would be more intuitive to use like the cursor on a Wii... the further you move from center of screen, the faster the pip would move in that direction. Still, if you could get rid of the PC and make a dongle for the 360 that handles everything, this seems like it could be a marketable device product. I'd get one.
Ryan @ Aug 7th 2007 3:02PM
I was thinking more along the lines of a product that shows up on Lik-Sang or similar. :-D I don't see any way to sell it along side the 360 at Best Buy.
dklicker @ Aug 7th 2007 3:02PM
That is pretty bad-ass. That guy should start a business on it. I would buy one for sure.
Irfan @ Aug 7th 2007 4:27PM
so this lone guy hacks it up and makes a useful control scheme... and the EA idiots with a Wii-Dev kit and probably a bunch of guys working on it couldnt make MOH:Vanguard remotely playable?
Azrael @ Aug 7th 2007 7:33PM
It makes you wonder doesn't it?
desu @ Aug 7th 2007 7:06PM
the kid could have cut out the "black box" if he used an old pc with a serial port instead. The serial port could have emulated a ps2 controler, there are even drivers just for that floating out on the interwebz.
Azrael @ Aug 7th 2007 7:34PM
I think this guy deserves more credit, all he has in mind is how to enjoy his games more, regardless of platform.
Andir3.0 @ Aug 7th 2007 8:03PM
Seriously, how is moving a controller back and forth more fun? I think you overrate the Wii-mote...
JBluntz @ Aug 7th 2007 11:45PM
Agreed! The fact is, even if you got reeeeeeally good at using the wiimote, you could never compete against someone using the regular 360 controller. Although, must give maaaaaaaad props to the idea, and the programming skills.
Keaton @ Aug 8th 2007 3:47AM
I agree with some of the other previous comments... Maybe this guy could partner with Ben Heckendorn and they could mass market a kit... That would be sweet!
hothotdisco @ Aug 10th 2007 11:59PM
What the hell? You can't even up aim or down. All we see in the video is him swinging the remote left and right. Whats the point of this mod if you can't even aim up or down? Seems kinda stupid to me.....
Drago Dracini @ Aug 15th 2007 6:26PM
This is quite possibly the worst mod I've ever seen. What about dual wielding? or aiming up and down. What a terrible idea.
Uejji @ Aug 19th 2007 7:30PM
He very clearly changes the pitch while first demonstrating the freelook by holding A. He looks down a little bit. The rest of the video he only changes by moving the remote left and right. So yes it is possible to look up and down. As far as dual-wielding, he has Y (change weapon) mapped as D-pad up, so the dual-wield, hold D-pad up while walking over a dual-wieldable weapon. Then to fire, use Z (otherwise a grenade button). Have you even played Halo 2?
