Japan gets the PSP lite in three additional colors
Showing a little love for the home crowd, Sony announced today that in addition to the three "basic" colors of black, silver, and white, Japanese PSP fans will also be getting the PSP lite in three metallic pastel shades: Rose Pink, Lavender Purple, and, um, Blue. No word on if we'll ever see these officially make it Stateside, but seeing as the original PSP was unlocked, you can bet some eager graymarketer is getting ready to cash in.
PS. You know Sony should've given the new model an official name when even PSP Fanboy is calling it the "PSP lite."

Japan always gets the cooler colors of a system before us. What I wonder is why videogame companies don't come out with systems in shades of green like with the original gameboy. I think the original gameboys had the best color options as well as the really cool transparent option. Imagine a transparent DS or PSP, I think they would be quite popular around the world.
ark_v2 @ Jul 18th 2007 8:26PM
Transparent looks cheap IMO.
Deluxe @ Jul 19th 2007 5:25AM
Transparent is very... Nokia 5110.

See, this is how Sony thinks:
Japan =

Lets not say this is old, so I'll leave it in that it's from yesterday. Anyway, I don't like the new colors. Too pastel. Black and White are sweet as always. Did you know about the new cable sets for the new psps? they even have a composite one!
Maff @ Jul 18th 2007 8:30PM
i think the new name is going to be: PSP is it not?
bentley green would be a cool colour!
silentseba @ Jul 18th 2007 8:33PM
They also get limited edittion Final Fantasy PSP.
Veritas II @ Jul 18th 2007 8:58PM
Yeah, that's the one I'd take if I had to pick a Slim. I prefer the hackable PSPhat at the moment.
Pedro @ Jul 18th 2007 8:37PM
Eugh pastel! Give me metallic any day.
Jamesology @ Jul 18th 2007 9:07PM
Yeah I totally Agree.. with the pastel colours being EWWWww. Bring back the metallic and GOLD. I wish Nintendo came out with a gold one then it would match my PSP. My GF has a pink PSP and DS; I want mine to match too!!

Alright, Sony, you've got the girls covered. Now where are the MANLY colors?
And damn you for naming the blue one after my favorite character. Where am I going to get the scratch to cover this purchase?

I see that they made the very clever choice of copying the DSs colors.

"PS. You know Sony should've given the new model an official name when even PSP Fanboy is calling it the "PSP lite.""
thanks for the tip buster, but its funny you didnt tell Apple to do the same when they released the enhanced 5.5th gen Apple iPod.
first the rediculous making fun of a MODEL NUMBER by Joystiq and US gamers and now i see Engadget has joined the show as well.
SPOOOOCK! @ Jul 19th 2007 6:21PM
ROWR! Getting a little defensive are we?
Nilay Patel @ Jul 18th 2007 10:11PM
I'm not sure what you mean by the 5.5G iPod, but we certainly did question Apple when they lifted Creative's "nano" name.

John @ Jul 18th 2007 10:15PM
The point is that even fanboys are calling it the PSP Lite... a la DS Lite, its current competitor.
Curmeo @ Jul 18th 2007 10:15PM
@ Nilay Patel,
Apple released an updated version of the 5th gen iPod Video. it has a brighter screen and a higher battery life. people refer to it as the enhanced iPod Video or the 5.5th gen iPod Video.
Nilay Patel @ Jul 18th 2007 10:36PM
I'm still not seeing the double standard here - as John said, the joke is that even an unabashed pro-Sony site is calling the new PSP the same name as the DS.
Curmeo @ Jul 18th 2007 10:19PM
@ John,
refer to my reply to Nilay Patel. this is a case of double standards.
Joystiq actually still refers to it as the PSP 2000, just to further make fun of Sony.
Curmeo @ Jul 18th 2007 10:54PM
@ Nilay Patel,
"I'm still not seeing the double standard here - as John said, the joke is that even an unabashed pro-Sony site is calling the new PSP the same name as the DS."
People refering to the new PSP as the "PSP lite" or the "PSP 2000" is similar to how people refer to the new iPod Video as the "enhanced iPod Video" or the "5.5th Gen iPod Video".
the double standard is that Sony gets made fun of/taunted for not renaming the new PSP while nobody says anything to Apple for not renaming its new iPod Video.
Joe @ Jul 19th 2007 12:58AM
It's not really a double standard because people are unofficially calling the new PSP by the name of it's chief competition. Nillay would not be criticizing Sony if people were calling the new PSP the PSP 2.0 or PSP2, for example, because those are not reminiscent of any competitors products. Also, it's not like people are calling the new 5th gen iPod the iPod Vision:m, or the iAudioPod, so it really is a poor comparison.
Joe @ Jul 19th 2007 1:01AM
My bad, I didn't mean Nillay was criticizing Sony, I meant you Curmeo! :p
Curmeo @ Jul 19th 2007 3:45AM
@ Joe,
Joystiq, which my original post addressed, is actually calling the new PSP the "PSP-2000", instead of "PSP lite". pspfanboy.com refered to the new PSP as the PSP lite in a "genuine" way since Joystiq already established with its US gamers audience that the model number PSP-2000 is something to be made fun of.
im not blaming Nalay Patel. He/she didnt even know about the 5.5th gen iPod Video. i guess i overreacted a bit since Patel didnt even refer to Joystiq. im just annoyed with Joystiq for the anti-Sony behavior.
Christopher Grant @ Jul 19th 2007 8:18AM
Yeah, we sure do hates us some Sonyz. Seriously, grow a sense of humor. This is not serious business.
Nilay Patel @ Jul 19th 2007 9:05AM
@ Curmeo:
Which do you think is more likely: that I didn't know about the 5.5G iPod (which I happen to own), or that I simply misunderstood your criticism? Take a deep breath. I own and love a PSP too.
Bruno @ Jul 18th 2007 11:38PM
These aren't really colors now are they. They're just tints. Sony is one of the most conservative companies in entertainment. Hard to believe considering the content of some of the third party games.
The PSP design begs for a vibrant color like Ferrari red or BMW's Laguna Seca blue.
three @ Jul 19th 2007 12:09AM
this is old..i saw these colors on japanese builds 1-2 months ago
ark_v2 @ Jul 19th 2007 1:03AM
But I can bet that they weren't the updated PSPs
Joe @ Jul 19th 2007 12:48AM
I've gotta hand it to Sony; this new slimmer slicker PSP is looking better by the minute and combined with the improvements/price drops to the PS3 line, they are really moving in the right direction to generate some chatter and market share.
whatchaknow @ Jul 19th 2007 10:16AM
i want the lavender!!! LOL!
classicgmr @ Aug 26th 2007 5:34AM
i hope that the new psp's built in memory will make it easier to surf the web cause the old psp didnt have enough memory for most sites. also i hope they update the flash player
