Managed to not entirely forget that
Sony owes us all a rumbling
SIXAXIS or two? If so, you may actually be delighted to hear that the end result could be quite the device if whispers stemming from the latest issue of
PSM France are to be believed. Reportedly, the forthcoming controller will not only sport a vanilla rumble, but it will also boast a "touch sense" feature that allows rumbles to emanate from specific locales on the device. Additionally, the shakin' is said to be "more powerful and more intense" than prior renditions on the PS2, which means that the 90-pound wusses in the crowd best get to the weight room, and programmers are purportedly working to enable shorter bursts of sensation to make even the most subtle of movements ones you can feel. Now, how's about a
release date?

Release date? It should have been November 17th, 2006!

and get their asses sued for patent violation. right? Heck, if everything can be perfect the first time around, Zune would sell millions and everybody would be happy. :)
Any idea how the battery would hold up?
Chris Clark @ Jul 3rd 2007 9:24PM
But all they had to do is pay the royalties and put the rumble in from the get-go. It's better than trying to downplay the feature as last-generation.
nawtyeravgjoe @ Jul 3rd 2007 9:28PM
what do we do with our last gen sixaxis's's? =(
Andir3.0 @ Jul 3rd 2007 9:29PM
If your not going to use them, ship em my way. I never use rumble anyway.
Phour ZwanZig @ Jul 4th 2007 1:34PM
Oh I have one or two places for Sony to go with the old controllers..
But really, not even out a year, and they redesign the controller..
With SIXAXIS selling for 49.99, I can see Sony only releasing SIXAXIS yet with the system and charging 59.99 or 69.99 for the SIXAXIS R-Type(or whatever they end up calling it..)
**Sorta how they played out the whole DUALSHOCK when they launched it.. The PS still sold with the Reg controller..
JTM @ Jul 3rd 2007 9:29PM
Thank you Sony. I knew you could get the rumble in there somehow. Just make sure it's out in time for MGS4.
I've been waiting for MGS4 before purchasing the PS3. I sure hope it takes advantage of the super special rumble features of the new controller. I know the Anti-Personnel Sensor wouldn't be the same without it.
Ant @ Jul 3rd 2007 9:29PM
wait but sony said rumble was last gen =/
kingofwale @ Jul 3rd 2007 9:50PM
>wait but sony said rumble was last gen =/
exactly, that's why they have new rumble. ;)
Dave @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:19PM
Of course they did. It's marketing, what do you expect them to say? "We're currently in a legal issue over rumble and as such we will not be shipping the controllers with rumble support"
And Nintendo to say: "We're trying a new direction with a console that is going to be, unquestionably, the weakest hardware offering this generation. BUT! We have a new controller"
For Microsoft, "The Xbox 360, admittedly, has a myriad of issues that are causing it to fail at a reported rate of anywhere from 25% to 33% of units that are sold. Happy shopping!"
Remember that all three hardware manufacturers are still businesses. As such, they've got one objective that outshines the others by a ridiculously large amount: At the end of the day, they're _all_ out for your money.
kyle @ Jul 5th 2007 12:37AM
yeah but sony needs to do everything they can to help sell there console even though i think it won't help
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ Jul 3rd 2007 9:49PM
Purposes of vibrating/force-feedback controllers:
-Gives the player a more realistic feel to what is going on in-game
-Ball massager
joseraulnova @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:23PM
more powerful? this new rumble is next gen
Billy Kincaid @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:39PM
What is "vanilla rumble", exactly?
Chris Clark @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:46PM
I think what they mean is the standard rumble that we've come to know since the Nintendo 64. That's my guess anyways.
J @ Jul 5th 2007 8:27AM
sounds to me like they are getting away from the old unballanced-motor rumble and going with something a little controllable. some sort of magnetic/solonoid deal.

tehpyro @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:41PM
ppfftt... Rumble is soo last generation
Paul @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:51PM
Sony should allow people to send in their current Sixaxis in and get them exchanged for these new ones. Otherwise, they will be screwing their current user base.
Taylor @ Jul 4th 2007 2:36AM
Do we remember back in the PS1 days, when Sony originally shipped the PS1 with NO analog sticks, then the Dual Stick, then the Dual Shock? No refunds/returns along the line there.
Ed @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:55PM
And you wait and you wait and you wait and you wait ...
... and you wait and you wait and you wait.
When/if this finally does come out and gets packaged with the system (along with a price-drop, of course) and a few more decent games strike the PS3, I might be inclined to finally buy one.
Derka @ Jul 3rd 2007 11:34PM
Current PS3 owners best get them free. Or theres gonna be some riots.
Shane @ Jul 4th 2007 1:06AM
Seems the rumble is indeed Sony's HDMI...
Sony/Microsoft PR: "Don't need it"
'Ignorant' masses: "We want it"
Sony/Microsoft PR: "OK, here it is...maybe you need it"
Ant @ Jul 4th 2007 2:00PM
that will be a tiny riot with the number of ps3 owners!
ZING
i keed i keed =)
jerrt @ Jul 4th 2007 1:56AM
well i guess if you are going to put rumble back in you might has well throw a turbo charger on it.
the.e33 @ Jul 4th 2007 2:35AM
This doesn't matter if there's no related software to support it. If developers don't know that 100% of the userbase has a specific device, they have less incentive to develop for it. How many PS2 games supported the eye-camera, or other add-ons sold after the fact? If you're a software developer are you going to spend precious time and money coding for specific sequences and events that use the rumble if only 10% of your audience will experience it?
25onhand @ Jul 4th 2007 10:03AM
so sony decides to come out with a rumble sixaxis AFTER people have already spent for a ps3 WITHOUT rumble. now, they're coming out with a controller that ONLY HAS a rumble upgrade?
too little too late.
Russell @ Jul 4th 2007 9:56PM
Yea for money.
Russell @ Jul 4th 2007 9:54PM
They best not or I will return my second sixaxis since I bought it a week ago
Jamesology @ Jul 5th 2007 1:54AM
SWEET! Good thing I waited for the PS3 purchase. Now I won't be screwed over with a rumbless controller. Though, I got screwed with my Wii; There's not many good games out. When is Mario Revolution coming out? I stuck with Mario Party 8(fun only with friends):( So far that pretty much the only game I want for Wii. MGS4 for PS3
