@Adam Zaglaniczny: Convincing surround sound is possible through headphones, as you pointed out, but only with the right recording equipment. 5.1 surround sound delivers different sounds to each speaker, and because it assumes the speakers (not headphones) are positioned correctly around the listener these sounds are projected with disregard of idiosyncrasies in frequencies and delays that your brain requires to interpret them accurately with headphones.
I have 3 pairs of 5.1 headphones which fail miserably at providing good positional audio. I can't set up a 5.1 system due to my living situation so headphones are my only option. Needless to say, I have reached the conclusion that accurate or even acceptable 5.1 surround sound is only possible with external speakers, at least per my experience.
