Sony says PS3 now supports downloaded PSOne games (again)

Sony first touted PS3 support of previously-downloaded PSOne titles when it rolled out its latest firmware update last month, but as many of you are no doubt aware, that desirable feature didn't exactly work as promised. Well, it looks like Sony has finally managed to get all the kinks worked out, and is now telling folks that the PSOne game they've already downloaded for their PSP will, in fact, work on their PS3 as well. The only catch is that you'll have to re-download them on your PlayStation 3, although Sony thankfully won't charge you again for that additional hassle. As our pals at Joystiq point out, however, the real PSOne-related feature we're waiting for is downloads straight to the PSP (or even by way of a PC), but there's still no word from Sony on that possibility.

too bad crash bandicoot dosent work. its the only game i actually bought just for this!
Ben @ May 3rd 2007 4:46PM
Crash works. I've been playing it all afternoon. It didn't show up in the store for me though. Just go to your download list and re-download it. You can copy your saved game from the PSP back to the PS3 too.

No actually what they said last month was that the firmware update would *allow* for this feature but that the games themselves would need to be updated for them to work (and re-loaded, at no charge).

So do these run in wide-screen and fill the psp screen? Or do they just squash into square video...?
James @ May 3rd 2007 5:31PM
On the PSP, you have a choice of "original" (not stretched at all), "zoom" (fill the screen but keep aspect ratio, bars on sides), or "stretch" (fill the whole screen). I don't know how PS3 handles it.

Less than 10 characters needed to fix this.

Isn't being able to play PS1 games on your PS3 a relatively more important point than being able to play them on the PSP? Given the option, I'd much rather play games on the couch on the big screen than on the PSP. I'd be like if Virtual console titles were only playable on the DS: lame. The question isn't why do you need the PS3 to get to the PSP, it's why they bothered with the PSP part in the first place. However, now that it's "fixed", having the option for both is nice: another feature that the 360 or Wii don't have.

Do the games come out in a higher resolution than they did on the PS1? I remember reading Bleem is/was capable of this..
Jerrett @ May 3rd 2007 11:19PM
whos waiting? I'm not. I play MGS and GT2 along with many other PS1 titles on my PSP all the time; and I don't even own a PS3. Sony will never be able to compete with the homebrew scene.

You can convert your original PS1 game disks to work on the PSP if you use 3.xx OE firmware.
