SIXAXIS controller gets a blue LED makeover
Who cares about waiting for a patented idea to come to fruition when you can just handle things yourself? In ebphondaprelude's case, the modder apparently didn't feel comfortable waiting for Sony's LED-infused SIXAXIS to make it to market, and cracked open the PlayStation 3 controller for a bit of hackeration. Seemingly on the less difficult end of the DIY spectrum (at least compared to some entries we've seen), this mod simply requires a steady hand, 2.8v LEDs, a bit of wire, and your trusty soldering iron. The end result gives you four LEDs across the top and a PlayStation symbol that emanates blue in the night. So if you've nothing better to do on this first day back from an entirely too short holiday pause, be sure to hit the read link and get to work.

That thing looks awesome. I heard that you have to ground it and everything.
All this is going on, and ive got to wait till march till i even get my PS3, let alone mod it.

Will Pillar: You don't have to wait until march to do this mod... 6-axis controllers are EVERYWHERE.

Hey do you guys notice the slot "5 LED" for the stock board?
does this mean sony is planning to make a controller with LED lights in the middle?
Jettic @ Jan 2nd 2007 2:08PM
I sure hope so but if not, ill make a killing off of charging my friends/people to install leds in there controllers, because i have experience doing this...
Paul @ Jan 3rd 2007 2:10AM
Im sure Sony was originally planning on having the PS button light up. Ive seen some stock photos of the controller that has the PS button lit up red.
jettic @ Jan 4th 2007 1:18PM
Hey Paul I don't see a link, you mind reposting it?
RyanTV @ Jan 2nd 2007 2:14PM
now if this would only keep the controllers synced with the console it would be worth doing :)
clayton @ Jan 2nd 2007 2:36PM
wow i should do that to my xbox 360 controllers
oh wait.....
joba78 @ Jan 2nd 2007 4:36PM
Looks/Sounds like a bad case of 360 envy...Poor guy...If you're reading, sick modder, there's only one cure!

this is a fitting tribute to Sony's problems with blue diode laser manufacturing troubles.

Will said he had to wait til March to get a PS3, not the controller. I don't think he is worried about modding a controller, when he doesn't even have the system yet. When he said, "mod it", I think he was referring to the PS3 and accessories in general.

Ridiculous. Blue LED's are *SO* 1990's. Get over it. Red LED's are the new blue.
somebody @ Jan 2nd 2007 11:01PM
yeah thats pretty awesome. but i think ill wait untill the warrenty runs out.
Andir3.0 @ Jan 2nd 2007 11:18PM
The controllers are practically disposable by design. Once the battery's charge cycle wears out (as all LiIon batteries do) you pull the battery and toss it. At least according to the manual. I only assume we will see third party batteries come to market soon though.

Tried out this mod myself with a standard 5mm Blue LED @ 3.7v that you can get at your local Radio Shack. It resulted in a much brighter PS button but it was a pain in the ass to fit it in there, had to melt down some plastic and cut some rubber but I managed to squeeze it in. Pics are on the link
