Don't bother picking up a PS3, PS4 is right around the corner
In response to some fairly bogus claims by an "analyst" last week, Sony has come out of the woodwork to state that yes, it is indeed planning to build a PlayStation 4, but not until at least 2010. Therefore, by taking this quote completely out of context, we have deduced that there's a mere three year wait for some next-next-gen goodness, which can be easily tide over by FFXII, GTA and SotC. However, were we to actually do our job, we would let you know that in the interim Sony is planning on firmware upgrades for the PS3 to expand media center capability, allow third party applications, and to support third party controllers similar to that of the Wii. "To say that there will be no PS4 because of a management change is a bit far fetched," says Paul Holman. He also went on to mention the possibility of a keyboard and mouse bundle with the PS3, predict at least 20 new games for the European PS3 launch, and to tout that schmancy Cell processor under the hood. We're standing by for a PR cleanup crew any moment now.[Via Digg]

PS4 will begin delays in 2010, or will begin to ship in crazy limited numbers in 2010?
clinton @ Sep 9th 2007 2:42AM
your right the ps4 is going to be awasome but what about the price of it .anyway the wii is a good competor because they use basic okay grafics but the reason people dont like it because they did not notic there attention to game play some of their systems run perfectly but they glich if they fix that they will be ok .nintendo only wants to entertain people or make them fit .all sony does is make games and what for big profit.so if your are thinking to buy a xbox 360 or a ps3 think does bill gates have enough money already and care about the company that is honerable to there costomers think nintendo .dont be angry with me for my coments be nice to nintendo if you have to talk to me on game play contact me or add me on msn at cd_clint@hotmail.com
Al @ Jan 19th 2008 4:46PM
I think that they are talking about starting to make a ps4 in 2010 so it'll take atleast another 5-10 yrs so itll b out in like 2015-2020-very long time. . . and i also believe no one will be buying it 4 the fact that they will lower the price of ps3 by then and ppl will b buying that!
Zero @ Dec 4th 2006 10:36PM
By the time we all get ps3's the ps4 will have come out and we will all be "WTF?"
Billy Kincaid @ Dec 4th 2006 10:40PM
True story.
ryan @ Dec 14th 2008 7:44AM
well, not everyone will get ps3s. we will keep rocking and mod'ing our 360s...
Jackattack @ Mar 17th 2009 8:40PM
ur right there!
so save up 4 a ps5! LOL! :)
Jason C @ Dec 4th 2006 10:39PM
Propababy the latter, Ben. Well thats why I'm already saving up my 5k to buy a PS4 and getting my camping gear ready so I can camp out a year early so that way I can be guaranteed to get one within the first year of the release. Then, I'll have the option of auctioning it off on Ebay for a 1500% profit!
andreas monk @ Jan 2nd 2007 4:28PM
Amen Brother..Im going to start saving 5k and yes i will sell it for 1,500 percent profit =)
andreas monk @ Jan 3rd 2007 9:58AM
Amen!
JaG @ Jul 23rd 2007 11:02PM
Don't forget to pack your gun, in case anyone else presumes to buy one before you.
alex @ Dec 28th 2008 11:28PM
$1500? Now, i definitely know you're trying to manipulate consumer actions
Panther_V @ Dec 4th 2006 10:48PM
Do engadget have anything better to post than Sony bashing. I think you have gotten the message threw that Sony screwed up PS3 launch. Anyways Nintendo , Microsoft and Sony are all working on the next console , they take years to develop.
Murty @ Dec 4th 2006 10:49PM
I can be happy with my ps2 for now.
enzo @ Dec 4th 2006 10:51PM
oh snap! What about ps9 when can I get that?
Ben @ Dec 4th 2006 10:53PM
my guess? 3 days before the end of the world.
Oh, and they will be making 3.
kyle @ May 22nd 2008 7:57PM
after ps8
robby1051 @ Dec 4th 2006 11:01PM
Panther_V, you cant reason with blind hate,
everyone is very angry at sony
and the bashing will continue for another year or so
The sony bashers can't be bargained with. They can't be reasoned with. They don't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And they will absolutely not stop, ever
but dont worry man I hear you
Ben @ Dec 5th 2006 9:45AM
GOD YOU ARE A FUCKIN MORON! Have you ever heard of the word SARCASM? That is how Engadget writes if you haven't noticed. They were being sarcastic about it because everyone is bashing Sony (including them sometimes) so they JOKINGLY bashed them about this. Key letters there are J-O-K-E!
Michael @ Dec 4th 2006 11:02PM
It's really silly that Engadget is spinning this in such a fanboy way.
I mean, it's bad enough they didn't even quote the guy as saying it; but even they used the keywords "at least".
Bravo, Engadget.
No logical person (non-fanboy) believes that Sony has the PS4 planned for release in 2010, like the "Vice President of Technology" for SCEE read it right off his desk calendar.
I don't have any next-gen console right now, but the level of stupidity and immaturity associated with all the "anti-sony" stuff going on lately makes me want a PS3 more than anything.
And I cannot believe I just read this on Engadget...
Achilles @ Dec 4th 2006 11:10PM
I don't think Engadget is Sony bashing on purpose. Sony is under major scrutiny for heavy factual evidence. All major gaming and electronics blogs and websites are commenting with the same criticisms. It is a console war right now and much of the focus is on the negatives. That's the nature of the beast.
BTW I saw this same story on "Attack of the Show" earlier today with same views as engadget. So don't be so shocked.
Martin @ Dec 4th 2006 11:20PM
Everyone who bashes Sony has a right to do so. PERIOD. Sony's lack of respect for its customers and continuous selfishness is all the reason I need. Rootkits, explosive batteries, overpriced electronics. Did you know what our Sony Rep told me when I asked him why their computers were so much more expensive. He said it's the "software." He told me all about the video editing software and super high end video software that they include. Instead of giving consumers the choice of what software they want to buy. They bundle their own crap software and then overcharge for it. This is typical Sony thinking. It's never about what they can do for the consumer it's always about how much money the can screw out of us. Don't worry, tho, Sony's not the one who's on my sh*t list. Microsoft still is a little. I still think their software department sucks. But they've redeemed themselves a lot with their hardware department. The Zune was a bad turn though. Either way, my point is that Sony deservers every bit of bad press that they can get. It's the only way their going to change their ways and stop screwing everyone (except me). Honestly due to the complete lack of any decent products right now on the market. They should really just close down shop.
riggs @ Dec 5th 2006 12:55AM
THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
alex @ Dec 28th 2008 11:28PM
Fuck you and your bullshit, that's why your country is in a recession and your auto industry is on the brink of collapse and no one can afford a PS3 cause they don't have a fuckin' job. All you want is to win the battle so can brag bout your quick and lame ass victory. You need to think about the war. Sell products based on it's individual merits rather a desparate politcal plea, then your followers enjoy nothing but the best and nothing less. I got plenty of money left over from all my smart shopping, sucka ass fools
humpty @ Dec 4th 2006 11:04PM
Nintendo will be the first out of the gate with a new console; outside of Zelda (which took 4+ years to make) the Wii games are getting shit reviews; mainly because the controls suck, lack of AI, no physics, and worst graphics than XBOX. Look up Splinter Cell DA, Red Steel, or Marvel UA reviews to see what i mean.
Day one, Wii graphics are already below the standards of the XBOX but better than PS2. Things are going to get pathetic really fast; think about 1 or 2 years from now.
jon @ Dec 5th 2006 6:58AM
Last I checked red steel is the only exclusive game that is really getting bad reviews. And becides, even if those reviews are bad(where ever you are getting them) I still think they are fun. Plus that is no reason to make a new console.
Michael @ Dec 4th 2006 11:13PM
I would completely expect it from G4, not Engadget.
The only FACT is there are no FACTS in this story.
There's not even evidence that he said anything about 2010. It's ridiculous that this made it off the original page.
Michael @ Dec 4th 2006 11:24PM
Yeah, swell Martin. Everyone has a right to bash Sony. Just like any other company.
But it definitely makes a blog look petty and sensationalist when they post a story like this. It's certainly their right, though.
Matthew Ryan @ Dec 4th 2006 11:20PM
Well i think i will just wait for the PS4... i mean hoping they learn from their mistakes
Achilles @ Dec 4th 2006 11:42PM
I don't think this blog is any less creditable for posting news on Sony's trials and tribulations. Personally I'm glad that they can give their opinions on it as well. Sony has a rough start, but a year from now we will be able to really see the ps3 for what it really is and the status on Sony.
Seriously though, the whole "Engadet is bashing Sony" thing is getting just as bad as the "First post" thing and the "I for one welcome blah blah" thing.
Dean @ Dec 4th 2006 11:35PM
Maybe by 2010, the PS3 will be a reasonable price.
imageburn13 @ Dec 4th 2006 11:36PM
Good to hear we have lots more playstations to look forward to, but i dont think that really was in question. The thing here is this; the PS2 came out in 2000, was redesigned in 2003, and is being phased out in 2006. So I think that by the time the world is comfortably saturated with the PS3, we'll see a redesign in late 2008 and the PS4 in 2010. Its following the same schedule. Microsoft may or may not release a redesign, but as the PS3 has more raw capabilites, they will need a next-next gen system by early 2008 to avoid being surpassed by Sony. I know this is all speculation; my point is that the console wars will always be going on, only its speeding up exponentially; ie. the tech curve is ever-increasing.
icepop4who @ Dec 4th 2006 11:37PM
maybe the PS4 is what charlie murphy wants. a playstation that you can do.
robby1051 @ Dec 4th 2006 11:48PM
Hey Martin,
I understand sony is in a bad way about things but
remeber when Microsoft cut the price on thier over expensive software "Windows xp"?
Thats right it sucks and its still the same price at end of life
oh and by that token that they charge too much for hardware due to software they put on it
you could say Apple is evil
Martin @ Dec 4th 2006 11:58PM
I'm no Mac lover, but Apple actually bundles a lot of everyday useful software with their computers. Things that everyone can use. Except iMovie HD. You didn't read my comment if you're trying to say something about Microsoft software. Microsoft hasn't really changed their operating system in almost 10 years except for some new features and some more security. Vista is going to be the biggest change since windows 95. They just continue to suck off their monopoly. It's the reason why IE sucks so bad. They didn't care enough to improve it. I give no company any leeway. And what hardware does Microsoft make that they include software with it? I really hope you're implying that they shouldn't include the OS with the Xbox 360. Anyways, I've never heard a Microsoft Rep tell me that they charge more for their hardware because the NON-ESSENTIAL bundled software is so good.
Shmoe @ Dec 5th 2006 12:01AM
I'll just buy the Xbox 362 or will it have to be 364?
Castle @ Dec 5th 2006 12:02AM
WTF is up with Engadet and Paul Miller, going back to their old ways.
All Sony said is that the analyst assumption from management reshuffle doesn't mean there isn't going to be a PS4. In fact, MS is the company that has short life cycles regarding consoles, they've already abandoned the Xbox1, and the PS2 is still going strong for a conosle that came out a year before the Xbox.
andy @ Dec 5th 2006 9:48AM
Castle: "MS has already abandoned the XBOX1."
Please define abandoned for me because I apparently misunderstand the meaning of the word.
I thought I was playing Halo2 online last night and looking at commercials for new games on the XBOX 1 during a couple of TV shows. If that's abandonment, then they can just keep on with it.
myscrnnm @ Dec 5th 2006 12:03AM
"I am very skeptical when Sony promises to provide new features to their devices through firmware upgrades after my experience with the PSP. "
Quite the contrary. I've seen what I need with the firmware updates and so much more. Pretty much the only thing I'm waiting on for my PlayStation Portable is a notepad-like application for jotting down notes and such.
Hardcore @ Dec 5th 2006 12:22AM
I'm writing this camped out on the National Mall in DC. I have begun camping for the PS4. Given the rate of strip mall expantions, I estimate that a Best Buy will be built here about 50 ft from my present location in 3 years and 2 months; situated between the WWII memorial and the Lincoln monument. After all it is already a mall, if all goes as planned, I can raise my family here and teach them to hunt the squirrels and panhandle from the tourists to support me in my camping efforts. This way, I can be certain that I will be first in line and will have guaranteed myself a PS4...Brilliant!! Yes I am that Hardcore.
walk2k @ Dec 5th 2006 12:33AM
I took this article to be a bit tongue-in-cheek.
I doubt PS4 is coming in 2010, and even if so, 3 years is a long time.
Media-center improvements would be nice. I'd like to stream MPEG2/MPEG4 media across the LAN, and the FAT32 4gb file size limit on USB drives is a bit of a pain.
... @ Dec 5th 2006 12:33AM
I would have to agree that Paul has been posting a lot of crap on engadget lately... I mean in the last week...
"Don't bother picking up a PS3, PS4 is right around the corner"
"Circuit City resorts to irony to move PS3 units"
"Sony's SIXAXIS controllers are wigging out"
To be fair, he also bashes other stuff...
"Optimus 103 keyboard demands $1,200 pricetag -- yes, you read that right"
"AMD's fancy new Quad FX chips smeared by single Intel CPU"
etc...
I mean, could you at least pretend to be giving us the facts? Is that too much to ask?
Jake D @ Dec 5th 2006 12:47AM
Ken Hirai said that he cannot imagine making a PS4. He see the PS3 being sony's last console. It makes sense since it costs them so much money to put out. The only reason we have a PS3 is so sony can press their blu-ray.
Zac @ Dec 5th 2006 12:48AM
Did anybody read this blog post before jumping to whatever preconceived ideas they have??
The commentary starts with "by taking this quote completely out of context."
It's more of a musing than news.
JBDragon @ Dec 5th 2006 12:53AM
Can you really believe anything Sony actually says these days? They lie so often, and they don't even try to make it a good one. It's like they just don't care. They think, they're SONY and the Name is all that matters. Right now the PS3 is a $600 paper weight. Plus half the games won't even play in HD on my HDTV. For being so long Delayed, after all it was suppose to come out in the Spring, How come there are so many problems?
BlakFlagg @ Dec 5th 2006 4:02PM
Look, did anyone else here get one of the first-gen PS2s that wouldn't play the blue disks without opening the box and putting another magnet in it? After two months of having my PS2 I couldn't play Onimusha or Tekken Tag. So I had to crack open the case and mod it. Not to play hacked games or to open a portal to another dimension of piracy, but to play the games I PAID for.
This was when I swore off Sony. Turns out to be a good decision. PSP seems to be either GREAT or SUCKY depending upon who you ask. As console prices wise and tech-knowledge goes up, I really can foresee a huge sea change as more and more people switch to PC gaming.
I mean, why duplicate effort with a "console that can act like a pc" when you can BUY a decent gaming rig for a bit more. Something that you can upgrade as time warrants and can actually do other things well besides game.
Tom @ Dec 5th 2006 1:25AM

Nisvara @ Dec 5th 2006 1:33AM
I agree with what Martin said about Sony's attitude towards consumers. Any company willing to perform such an insolent act as installing a back door (aka Rootkit) into a product definitely deserves to be slammed. But that's just one brick in the road. Sony has been creating quite a shit trail over these past couple years. I had many great moments with my PS2 but that was then and this is now. PS3 is just too late and too much. PS4 maybe. But, only if and after I see a change for the better in Sony's relationship / attitude towards it's consumers and the market in general. No more of this "I am Sony. I am your technological pimp and you are my consumer bitches. You buy what I wish, when I wish for how much I wish. Bitch betta have mah money!" Actually now that I think of it. In this context anyone who defends / supports Sony is actually Sony's bitch. Blind allegiance gets you 0wned.
alex @ Dec 28th 2008 11:28PM
You're an idiot, shut up. Too much? Where do you live, Africa. You're telling me sony's $399/$499 price is drastically different from the Xbox 360 elite's $459 price tag. Dumb people just make me very angry.
