Xbox 360 survives multi-roll car crash, keeps churning
Some stories are simply too sensational to be true, thus giving us every reason we'd ever need to just blow it off, but there's one saving grace to a whacked-out story: pictures. Reportedly, an Xbox 360 owner was rammed in a hit and run style accident, where his Chevrolet S-10 "rolled over three or four times," launching the helpless console and a bevy of accessories onto the freeway. While the fellow (thankfully) survived the ordeal with little more than a "bruised elbow," his beloved console suffered quite a beating; the Xbox 360, its power brick, and several controllers were ran over by oncoming vehicles, leaving "tire marks" everywhere and "squishing" the metal supports within. After the turmoil subsided, this hardcore gamer was (understandably) more concerned with the life of his toy than whether or not his insurance policy had expired, so he rushed home to try things out. Although his trigger arm was a bit sore, the console managed to boot up, play games, and even play back a DVD, providing an assumed sigh of relief for traumatized lad. You can catch a video of the rugged console in action after the break, while hitting the read link will show you the survivor's tale and a bevy of pics.

This is why I love my Xbox 360, I can take it to war with me.

Looks like this guy was wearing this outfit when he crashed: http://www.wackynoodle.com/360/additional_truck_pics/100_0479.jpg
strider_mt2k @ Nov 17th 2006 10:57AM
Yeah, okay. I believe this.
An Xbox 360, known for it's fragility standing still, survived being driven over with car(s) and not only does the optical drive still work, but the loading mechanism is unaffected.
Engadget, I fear you've been punked.
Yaya @ Nov 17th 2006 11:07AM
So What? Frederick's Dragon ate my Xbox 360, and when he crapped it out weeks later (Dragons have a notoriously slow digestive system) it still worked! And it didn't even smell like poo!
Padraig @ Nov 17th 2006 11:09AM
"tire marks" on the case? mmmm quasi-believable, but doubtful
Art Guy @ Nov 17th 2006 11:09AM
strider_mt2k - Yeah, I'm sure he smashed up his truck, destroyed a controller, remote, faceplate and a 360 just to punk people online. That guy!!!!
Matt B @ Nov 17th 2006 11:17AM
If it was the PS3, oncoming traffic that hit its ramp like body would get some nice 2 wheel drivin' ala Dukes of Hazard style... or just flip over.
Andrew @ Nov 17th 2006 12:44PM
Ha, haven't you seen the PS3 commercials?
If the PS3 was about to get run over, it would just have the car explode using its magical powers.
strider_mt2k @ Nov 17th 2006 11:23AM
Art guy, while the crash could very well have happened, I put it to you to to do some careful analysis of your own as to what actually happened to the X-Box 360 in question.
Since they are the ones making the claim, it's up to them to prove it's validity.
DM @ Nov 17th 2006 11:23AM
thats it! im buying the 360.
Chris @ Nov 17th 2006 11:28AM
So this guy's Xbox 360 still works after being in a car accident, and mine just up and dies after sitting in the same position for six months on a well-ventilated shelf. Yay.
Samuel McConnell @ Nov 17th 2006 11:35AM
You have to give it to ol' Microsoft...the original X-Box certainly wouldn't have worked after taking this kind of beating.
nDee @ Nov 17th 2006 11:40AM
What about Wii
Someone should try that............
U know, Nintendo makes Tough Machines............
DM @ Nov 17th 2006 12:15PM
If it had happened to the tiny wii, the end result is self-explanatory.
Andy @ Nov 17th 2006 11:46AM
Yeah, I'm with the disbelievers. Something isn't right here. An Xbox 360 DID NOT get run over by a car and not crushed. If you have one go push the sides together with your hands, it's going to flex, it's not strong enough that it could be run over by a car without being flattened.
Art Guy @ Nov 17th 2006 11:47AM
strider_mt2k - Did you even bother to look at the several dozen pictures he posted of his totaled truck, broken games, controller, remote, console, etc. I'm doubt he took a hammer to his thumb to turn it black just for added realism.
I know the first thing I'd do after being in a car accident is to smash my $400 console, destroy a few games and peripherals.
Alan Strangis @ Nov 17th 2006 11:47AM
Question for the guy in the accident...
When the 360 booted up, did you say "Wii"?
...
hello?
is this thing on?
Glad to hear the guy's okay!
Mykalson @ Nov 17th 2006 11:56AM
Ok, I can believe this happened. I was in a multi-roll wreck in January, and my 360 came through it completely unscathed too. Of course, it was in the box, securely wedged with the seatbelt around it in the back seat and covered with soft objects, but it was knocked loose and the box bounced around my back seat quite a bit.
I'm suprised, but I think it is feasible. I expected the red ring of death on mine, and while it didn't get ran over, it certainly got shook to hell and back.
strider_mt2k @ Nov 17th 2006 11:58AM
Artguy, if the story was only about a truck accident and some damaged stuff you'd be spot on.
Those surely are some photographs of some damaged goods.
However, this person is claiming that his 360 was run over not by just one, but by multiple cars and is still functional.
My issue is solely with that claim and nothing else.
I say let's take it to the Mythbusters, loser buys the first round.
ihavenoideawhatisgoingon @ Nov 17th 2006 12:08PM
I will attest that this CAN HAPPEN!!! One of my friends broke up with his girlfriend. When he asked for his 360 (which she bought for him last christmas) she said, come over and pick it up. He arrived to see her driving over it multiple times with her truck.
Frantically, on his way home, he called me up asking me if i could fix it for him. Not knowing the extent of the damage, i said, let me look at it.
The console was bent to hell, but the innards weren't too damaged. The dvd drive was a bit bent, but I took it apart and straigntened that back out. Now he's got his 360, hard drive and all (the fan broke, so it overheats sometimes), plugged into his TV, with just the motherboard and dvd drive sitting there!!!
split @ Nov 17th 2006 12:23PM
well my xbox didn't have a car run over it but i had dropped it on concrete ground and it works fine.
Bazza @ Nov 17th 2006 12:42PM
I bet if it was "Macbook Pro survives car crash" there would be more than enough believers.
Quite cool anyways, buy that shell is shot to hell. he would be smart not to move it around much.
Jason @ Nov 17th 2006 12:43PM
I can't wait until the first reports of PS3s dying start to trickle in, just so we can all stop hearing about how fragile the 360 is.
liquid @ Nov 17th 2006 12:59PM
Doesn't sound too far fetched to me, a couple years ago i was T-Boned at an intersection by someone running a stop sign. The force of the crash caused my car's engine to shutoff but my carputer kept on playing my tunes and didnt seem to be bothered at all. Ive seen PDA's and mp3 players run over by cars also with only a few scratches.
You have to remember also, a cars weight is evenly distributed to the 4 tires (made of flexible rubber btw), so if your under one tire you will only feel 1/4 the total weight of the car and only for a brief moment depending how fast the car is going. This is why getting your foot ran over rarely ever hurts.
Tomery @ Nov 17th 2006 1:11PM
Step 1: Destroy Truck and XBox 360 Accessories to demonstrate a fake, fully functional 360
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit!
Enough with the conspiracy theories already... what does this guy have to gain from a hoax like this? I think his stories and pictures are convincing enough.
EDubya @ Nov 17th 2006 1:17PM
How can a 360 handle this yet when I treat mine gently I get the 3 rings o' death?
rpboyer @ Nov 17th 2006 1:32PM
I love that his 360 survives a potentially fatal car accident but mine can't survive M$'s sh**y fall software update.
Arnold @ Nov 17th 2006 1:36PM
I don't know if anyone here opened a 360, but the metal under the plastic is pretty thick. It also has long screws going from the bottom to the top. All this adds up to a machine that could take some abuse.
Saluki @ Nov 17th 2006 2:35PM
Chris, I hear ya
Glad to hear it can survive a car accident. Mine couldn't survive 5 months sitting on my shelf
Steve @ Nov 17th 2006 3:41PM
I dropped my 360 in the pool, fished it out a minute later, dried it out and it worked just fine. Still does 3 months later!
Tom Rix @ Nov 17th 2006 5:51PM
Am I the only one that notices that the vast majority of 'fan boys' are for the PS3 and that 360 lovers don't bite back? If it was the other way around, PS3 fans would be up in arms.
I'm inclined either way, I play because it's fun. Not to impress other people. My current love, though, is Call of Duty 3 on 360.
GJP303 @ Nov 17th 2006 6:49PM
2 things, i put a AA battery in the road, a car ran right over it, with only a few small scratches left. There is also a video on SmashSomeStuff.com that shows these guys buying a 360 and "clumsily" dropped it several times in front of the clerk, then took it home and it was absolutely fine. (of course they burned it and stuff, pretty funny, but a waste, u might wanna check it out)
GJP303 @ Nov 17th 2006 6:53PM
I dropped mine off of a plane into the middle of the pacific ocean and had my servants dig it out of there, then i had a semi ran over it when I was playing DOOM on the free way.. & it only has a scratch from the time my servant cleaned it with a very soft cloth.. lol, im not kidding, this isnt a hoax... hummm... ya... i pinky-swear.

your friend is an idiot! get the stuff back then break up in that order! c'mon now!
Christian @ Nov 17th 2006 7:27PM
hey search for xbox being smashed on youtube, you'll see how durable they are. I have yet to see a video of the 360 being smashed though. Once I find it I'll post another comment.
Yay! I still remember my password here.

...rofl, how did you drop that shit into the pool?
strider, you're an idiot. Note the victim's original comments on xbox-scene.com, "360 had a tire mark on it. It had been ran over."
He didn't say it was ran over multiple times. And fact is, with the speed of the vehicle that ran over it - it wouldn't have added too much pressure even if applying 1/4th the vehicles weight; simply because it was on and off the 360 so quick. There wouldn't have been any impact pressure because the wheels of the car spin forward, thus making the car go over the xbox and not merely flinging it out of the way.
Thanks for playing, move along.
Gamer90 @ Nov 18th 2006 12:08AM
Exactly, the pressure to weight ratio is affected by the speed of the vehicle, being that this happened on a highway vehicles would have been going so fast that there would have been only slight pressure ontop of the Xbox 360. There's plently of videos of Gameboys, cell phones, DAPs getting run over by cars and coming out only slightly damaged.
EliasF @ Nov 18th 2006 1:50AM
And the next mod for the 360 will let everyone have the "run over" look. Nice...
Bogsnogger @ Nov 18th 2006 3:24AM
I have no doubt an xbox 360 could survive being run over, if the car was moving fast. You can only kill snakes on the road by locking the breaks when you run over them, otherwise they survive. And I imagine the metal xbox frame would be quite a bit stronger than a snake.
Xavez @ Nov 18th 2006 10:14AM
Nice casemod :).
