Well, here we are. 2006, and perhaps the last console launch of the decade. And here
they are, all decked out n' pretty. Go ahead, debate it. Just be nice, ok? At the end of the day the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, they're only video game consoles, and we love our babies the same. Oh, catch some more
flame-stoking conversation-inspiring pics after the break.

Well put, Rex!
LittleJoe @ Nov 11th 2006 1:01AM
damn... the wee is soooooo tiny compared to the ps3.
Linkawakened @ Nov 11th 2006 12:44PM
The Wii will Kill any opposition. Don't Defy the immense power of NINTENDO. Wii will kick all opponents butts.
ALL HAIL THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: TWILIGHT PRINCESS!!
Brian @ Nov 12th 2006 11:45PM
I am noticing more and more the diversity of people and their opinions. Some people keep open minds, considering other possibilties, while others only study their side of an argument. Wii already has peoples attention, adults, and kids. I was at Target and saw a couple looking at the Wii and talking with that they wanted one. I have never heard an older person say they wanted to play video games. So because Nintendo has a larger based audience now, it will sell more units. Xbox 360 sells nicely to more Hard Core gamers, and people that like to play multiplayer games. Because of games like halo and gears of war. So it will sell well but not the most. And sony because it is soo expensive, will sell the least. Espically when you can buy a 360 and a Wii for relatively the same price of a Wii. Granted Sony PS3 has lots of power, and looks nice, and has a motion sensitive controller, but because of Nintendo's larger audience, and excellent multiplayer games ffrom microsoft, sony wont do as well. Even though it is a cheap blue ray, not many people have HD tv's yet, and the debate Blu ray vs HD DVD isnt setteled yet. Because Sony is taking larger risks expecting people to dish out a few thousand for tv's and other required stuff, sony will not sell as well, but it will be an awesome system.
Matthew @ Nov 11th 2006 1:02AM
Wow that wii wii is tiny.
Ryan @ Nov 11th 2006 1:03AM
nice systems. should be intresting when the ps3 and the wii are released globaly. then the real debate starts.
Ryan @ Nov 11th 2006 1:05AM
ps3 is going to be pretty freakin awesome when it comes out!!
Porsche 911 @ Nov 11th 2006 3:27PM
Wow, look at that, your comments are the lowest ranked, why, because there are assholes who also post in this blog. PS3 is going to be the best system, I do like Nintendo, however, I do not want to play games with that remote, and I like the standard controllers. I have an Xbox360 and it sucks, I preordered a PS3, and I am only going to get the Wii when Super Smash Brothers: Brawl comes out.
3Omar97 @ Dec 3rd 2006 9:14AM
akkkkk...wrong xbox360 is the correct answer
Devon @ Nov 11th 2006 1:06AM
Wii will destroy all
G.J @ Nov 27th 2006 2:56AM
I have all 3 and the wii is the most fun(at least Zelda and exitebike are) Hoever Gears of war is on a whole new level. PS3 Blu Ray is good for my dvd's
giovanna @ Dec 6th 2006 7:20PM
the Wii is good but it's not great.
Wiiman @ Jan 30th 2007 5:57PM
Ya you are so right the wii is so ganna bet them all
Kev50027 @ Nov 11th 2006 1:07AM
I'm voting for the PS3
Ryan @ Nov 11th 2006 1:08AM
the wii will be fun but i think it owuld just get boring. yea swinging it around could be cool but it would be tiring. plus doesnt the wii have no dvd player built in??
Aaron @ Nov 11th 2006 1:24AM
"swinging it around could be cool but it would be tiring"
Wow, what kind of condition are we in if a video game can wear us out? ;) Sorry, couldn't resist. I have these mental pictures of sweaty people swinging that little wii controller, panting, and dumping cups of water over their heads as they play an intense round of tennis in front of a 50" LCD.
Leon @ Nov 11th 2006 6:03PM
it can play DVDs.
Winston @ Nov 11th 2006 7:06PM
the current wii can't play DVD's because they were trying to get a ton of them out the door for the holiday season at a low price. Next year a DVD playing wii will be released. But seriously, everyone already has a DVD player somewhere in their house. And if not, you can get one for like 40 bucks, and it'll still be cheaper than any other console. So please pick any other inadequacy for the wii to rag on, because that one is pretty weak
Evan Jones @ Nov 11th 2006 1:11AM
Ryan Block, you are a fortunate man.
Ryan Block @ Nov 11th 2006 1:22AM
You know, I think you might be right!
Gadget Extremist @ Nov 11th 2006 1:14AM
Observation: The bigger consoles are the most expensive consoles. Wii is the smallest and cheapest. With that said, I can't wait to play with my Wii Wii!
Kevin @ Nov 11th 2006 1:14AM
My predictions:
Wii - Will do very good at launch, but then slow down a little in sales after about a year.
360 - Will be the middle man. Not selling the most, yet not selling the least.
PS3 - Will do horrible at launch, but after a year or so will probably take the lead.
Mamps @ Nov 11th 2006 9:35AM
360's current hardware lead will last at least through the next 2 holiday seasons. It should be able to incorporate 2 price drops within that time period. Especially on the Core system, which seems to be designed to get down to $150 price point with it's current hardware configuration costs by year 4.
Realistically, Sony will be able to pull off the higher price by relying on it's brand loyalty and PS2 installed base thru July. After that, with the current state of business at Sony, it will be very difficult for Sony to take a bigger net loss on the PS3 to help increase it's market share since it's component yields will not yet have improved dramatically.
As we've seen over time, it takes roughly 2 years/10mil units to reach a point where the chip yields can make a big jump, lowering the consoles cost. With a possible $199 360 by next Holiday, Microsoft should probably hit 20 million consoles by the end of Jan 08. That's if they can sell 2.5m this Holiday, which w/out a price drop they won't be able to do based off of October's sales numbers.
With an install base that big, 3rd party game developers will HAVE to begin to developing with the 360 as the base console from a business standpoint. Since it will have the largest installed base and you can sell the most games.
When it's all said and done, PS3 and 360 will probably be neck-in-neck in North America, but 360 have more market share in Europe, India(2nd highest world population), and South America. But for that to happen, Sony will have to absorb a lot more cost to push that many units to catch up to a cheaper 360 console, which financially it is unable to do at least for next the 5 fiscal quarters.
B.T.W., I don't own any "next gen" console, I refuse to pay more than $300 when I only play 5-7 games a year. Which would make me an average "gamer" by industry analysts.
wii4ever @ Jul 28th 2007 12:52AM
like you said the wii will stop being both because every family in the world will have one
Ryan @ Nov 11th 2006 1:15AM
ya no shit. mr. block is the man. he gets all the hottest next gen gming systems b4 everyone. and gets to test them etc...plus hes great at what he does, iv been following engadget for a long time and ya hes good at reviewing products!! o and great work at keepin us updated on the ps3 and wii
Juan Lugo @ Nov 11th 2006 1:16AM
The Wii is goign to kill these other 2 systems just get back to me in a couple of months when the numbers will be off the roof with this tiny thing
Ryan @ Nov 11th 2006 1:18AM
no way. i agree with you on the others but ps3 is already immpossible to get for the holiday season. eb games has 200 more orders to fufill..people are camping outside..i knw i am...its going to sell. alot.. if the numbers are true what sony says by 2m units by the enf of 2006. they will sell everyone..plus its the cheapest blu ray player out there. s o people r gonna buy it!
Ryan @ Nov 11th 2006 1:20AM
plus sony has been the leader for ten years. they are hardly screw ups. they knw what they r doing!!
JayP @ Nov 11th 2006 9:30AM
im pretty shure sony had problems with their ps2 and ps1 launches...
Bob @ Nov 13th 2006 9:29PM
Same was true of Atari. Then of Nintendo. Then of Sega. Nobody stays on top for more than two generations.
I guess kids like you have short memories.
Engelbert @ Dec 5th 2006 7:49AM
Yup, Sony is top dog. They're going to be around forever and ever. You see, they create great formats which everyone will keep using and never discard. Like Betamax, Minidisc and memory sticks... oh wait... Well, atleast they'll never have a bad fiscal in which they show a 94% loss in profits... oh wait... Shut up! Sony's frickin' awesome, okay? They know what they're doing! I'm not just a fanboy, they're awesome and don't debate it, disregard all evidence against it!
Ryan @ Nov 11th 2006 1:20AM
plus sony has been the leader for ten years. they are hardly screw ups. they knw what they r doing!!
Andrew @ Nov 11th 2006 10:18AM
And let me guess, Sony makes the best 'cmpters', too? English class FTW there man. You're not making your argument any better by omitting half of the vowels in your sentence and forgetting about punctuation such as a comma.
Sony definitely doesn't know what they're doing, they just do what the other guy does.
Sony: "Look at our new PS3! It's the same exact style of play!"
Nintendo: "Here's the Wii, we actually have innovative ideas and change the way gaming is handled. Here are our nifty controllers."
Sony: "Uhhhh...uhhh... yeah... we have those, too!"
Sony just takes the same product they have and then try to make it prettier. They really aren't on the forefront with any new technology, and rarely innovate. The only reason the PS3 will do so well is because of the game selection over that of the Wii.
Kevin @ Nov 11th 2006 1:22AM
Sony hardly screws up? haha ;) good one
jon @ Nov 11th 2006 2:44AM
Just look at the P!nk memory card and psp.
Betatester @ Nov 11th 2006 1:23AM
Wii will be everybodies secondary console, and alot of peoples primary. people are under estimating it, and while its recently gained alot of hype it will be the number 1 selling console, while not the number 1 most played. sony will be lucky to grab some of its more ignorant fanboys. and 360 will continue to to rise and get good games.
Brian @ Nov 11th 2006 1:28AM
lol, I was thinking the same thing, damn lazy kids...
joelpurvis @ Nov 11th 2006 1:26PM
Halo.
Andy @ Nov 20th 2006 1:23PM
Heck, it could be a good thing for sure. Goodness knows some gamers I know could use a bit more of a workout. At least, the gamers not totally into DDR. :)
themegagear @ Dec 11th 2006 8:59PM
lol, i can see that to
Nick @ May 12th 2007 4:54PM
Wii's slogan: Diet doesn't work? Pills don't work? Are you having fun working out? Buy a wii and with regular game play, you can lose up to 20 pounds in 3 weeks while having fun!!!!!!
Johan @ Nov 11th 2006 1:27AM
does the ps3 have a built in PSU?
dhruv bhutani @ Nov 11th 2006 4:31AM
yes it does have an inbuilt pdu which is why it is bigger than other consoles.
Ryan @ Nov 11th 2006 6:16AM
god I really hope that was sarcasm. If you look at previous set of pics from when the wii was unboxed, you can see it has a power supply that is equally huge on proportion to its console as the 360's power brick is. The power supply is NOT built in.
Ryan @ Nov 11th 2006 1:27AM
ya lol. then some kid swings the controler into a vase or someones head. that would be funny. im waiting for that to happen. but ya the wii could tire sum peoples arm out especially in a sport game or sum. lol
AD @ Nov 11th 2006 1:37AM
The remote has a wrist strap for a reason, you know. :P
Arm-tiredness doesn't seem to be an issue; videos online of people playing Wii for hours show people saying that they didn't feel tired/sore/etc. Besides, if you do end up feeling tired, it's probably a sign that you should be hitting the gym instead of playing video games.
BlissX @ Nov 11th 2006 1:29AM
Hrm... pretend to throw a football in Madden 07 on Wii... or play football with my friends outside...
Inferno74 @ Nov 12th 2006 9:09PM
Hmm... Sitting around typing to unknown people or go out and talk with my friends.
alfonzo @ Nov 11th 2006 1:30AM
the ps3 is alot smaller than i thought it would be: obviously bigger than the 360, but not the lumbering giant it was first depicted to be (and WAY better than the original xbox in size). the wii is just amazing: that technology can be crammed so small...with alot of good games for ps3, it could do REALLY well; it has the capacity for great gaming, now it just needs to opportunity to show it.
dhruv bhutani @ Nov 11th 2006 4:31AM
thw wii is just a gamecube with a new controller . so its small size is not a big deal. the big deal is that sony has fitted a blu-ray player an awesome computer and the psu (x box 360 power brick lol )
into something which is not as big as projected by the media
