Get a PS3 in Hong Kong (legally) for cheap!
You know, it's not everyday that you can knock $100 off of the US retail price on one of the hottest gaming systems in the world. But if you find yourself in Hong Kong on November 17th, you'll be able to legally acquire a PS3 (60GB) for HK$3,780 ($486), or if you prefer to wait until December, you can get a 20GB model for HK$3,180 ($408). Now if you're keeping score at home, our US MSRPs will be in the neighborhood of $600 and $500, respectively -- so Hong Kong's getting a substantial savings, for sure. So if you're going to be in the neighborhood and are planning on buying one, don't forget about your pals over at Engadget; we'll, like, totally be your bestest friend forever![Thanks, LM Chong]

Don't forget that the voltage is different in HK and you'll need a converter to plug the cheap(er) PS3 into your house in the US!!!
James @ Nov 3rd 2006 4:34PM
Games may be fine but the movies are region locked.

Judging that my friend, who goes to visit family every year in Hong Kong, and gets games consoles and such from there, are always modded... I'll take my bets at that not being such a problem :P
Robotron @ Nov 3rd 2006 4:44PM
Should have kept this a secret. Now Sony is going to enforce an ID check for all consoles sold to make sure only Japanese citizens buy them.

Japanese in Hong Kong buying them? (just messin with you)
K2 @ Nov 3rd 2006 4:43PM
Anyone have any idea where in Hong Kong they will sell these? The big electronics chains such as Fortress (our version of Best Buy, Circuit City, etc) don't really carry consoles if I remember correctly. Most consoles such as PS2s and Xboxes are sold in smaller shops, sometimes under shady circumstances (read: modded). How will I actually be able to get a PS3 for the retail price?? Because if any of the smaller shops will have them, they will obviously charge a lot more than retail (pretty much for the same reason Lik-Sang WAS going to charge a premium for).
cloud811 @ Nov 6th 2006 8:56AM
watch sony do some more sueing....wow look at that. Lik-Sang was an HK company.... god damn sony...
Fuzz @ Nov 3rd 2006 4:51PM
I wouldn't jump on a plane and rush out there. I can't imagine they will get more than 15 or 20 of them.
Mystiko @ Nov 3rd 2006 5:02PM
In response to K2's query, i am pretty sure fortress would stock these, as i was in HK earlier this year and was on the look out for gaming accesories.
Another place to try would definately be the Computer Centre in Mong Kok (its literally just opposite the MTR). This is mostly just stuff for computors, but has roughly 100 or so vendors. If i was looking for one, it is the first place i would look. I know there are atleast 3 vendors who stock just gaming systems and accessories here, and remember them having aqquired launch stock for the PS2 when i was there during the launch of PS2.
Also a note about voltage differences, does anyone know whether the PS3 has an external or internal transformer? If its an external one, it could be just as easy as purchasing a power cable for your PS3 for whichever country you live in.
Hope this is of some help!
Vayeate @ Nov 3rd 2006 5:03PM
This is perfect! I'm going to be at HK over the holidays, time to call up some relatives =)
shon Dempsey @ Nov 3rd 2006 5:12PM
thats bs. why does china get them cheaper than us? cause all the parts are made there?
lOUDsCREAMEr @ Nov 3rd 2006 7:30PM
China?
hell no. Hong Kong is not Shanghai/Beijing.. its an AUTONOMY established by treaty between UK & yes the COmmunist China, protected/invaded/occupied by the Chinese army~~ maybe becoz of this, we don't have to spend a big chunk of $$$ into "national" defense (they paid their own bills), & so no GST/VAT!!
if ya hv $$$, ya can buy ANYTHING in Hong Kong!!
Ben @ Nov 3rd 2006 5:27PM
In the article it's said that the 'Recommended retail price' would be whatever it is for each versions of the system. Do you really think retailers will sell them for the 'Recommended retail price?'
LoCo @ Nov 3rd 2006 5:24PM
I'll believe it when I see it. Why so cheap though??
Cherrio @ Nov 3rd 2006 6:19PM
You'd have to be some chump to buy a PS3 off Sony at the US price. I for one will be avoiding the PS3 in protest over Sony's appalling customer discrimination. To paraphrase George Orwell, All customers are equal, but some customers are more equal than others.
Sameer Surampalli @ Nov 3rd 2006 6:57PM
Seems kind of useless... As mentioned, it will be region locked and probably in Chinese. I'm pretty sure you could be able to flash it to an US NTSC system, but that would require mods.
And the PSU/transformer is inside the PS3.
lOUDsCREAMEr @ Nov 3rd 2006 7:20PM
coz Hong Kong has *NO* GST/VAT or whatsoever!!
its also the cheapest place to buy a Mac / iPod / (insert_your_favorite_gadget_here)
(i live in Hong Kong,, yeah!!!!!!!!!)
jasonpoon @ Nov 3rd 2006 8:59PM
I'm from Hong Kong (but in Australia at this moment)
Everyone from Hong Kong thinks Sony HK did a great job this time (Even though they force you to purchase at least 2 games when you buy the console...)
However, as I know, it is almost impossible to get one for HK$3,780 now...
All the 1st batch PS3 in official Sony Shop were sold out. We can pre-register to get the next batch sales of PS3 with Game package (should be RR7, Genji, Gundam), you may get your console in December.
You can try to go to some smaller game shops, but HK$3,780 is impossible. Maybe around HK$4,000.
There are some shops promoting around HK$5,200 for the console+3games+an extra controller
phrax @ Nov 3rd 2006 10:15PM
As an Australian considering having my girlfriend import this for me, via a holiday, could anybody outline for me all the the things that will and will not work in my region?
Specifically, what Blu-Ray region is HK? Will my PAL PS1 and PS2 games work? Will connectivity with the PAL PSP be an issue? And any other possibly conflicts of interest?
Spaceman2004 @ Nov 4th 2006 1:29AM
This should help you some. Oz should be region 3, the same as China. The US will be region 1. Hong Kong use PAL as well.
OZ is 230V at 50Hz and Hong Kong is 220V at 50Hz. Since the PS3 has a transformer, I personally don't see it going pop over the 10V, because no where gives the correct voltage anyways, it can be as much as +/- 10V.
Don't quote me on any of this though, it's just some facts that I already knew!
CyborgX @ Nov 4th 2006 1:14AM
What region code will be used in HK for the BlueRay movies? (Games are universal)
CyborgX @ Nov 4th 2006 2:03AM
I remember reading somewhere that for BlueRay the regions will be categorized differently than from DVD's so did you refer to DVD regions or BlueRay?
littleme @ Nov 4th 2006 8:35AM
CyborgX: Blu-ray. :)
Ypoknons @ Nov 4th 2006 3:14AM

"You'd have to be some chump to buy a PS3 off Sony at the US price."
Just for the record, PS3 will cost 650 EUR where I live. That's about 825 USD. Games will probably be 60-75 EUR (75-95 USD).
Xbox 1 launched at 500 EUR, but nobody bought it at that price and Microsoft had to cut the price to 300 EUR after only a couple of months. PS3 is no doubt a great system technically, but when the Xbox 360 Premium is selling (even now) at 380 EUR it'll be interesting to see what happens.
Oscar @ Nov 4th 2006 1:45PM
I'm from Hong Kong.
Here is the news from Hong Kong as I know.
Firstly, the ps3 60GB is really HKD$3780(USD$486) and 20GB for HKD$3180(USD$408).
However, there is only around 16 shops got the stock and may be each shop only have around 20 ps3.
Moreover, the reservation for the 1st-lot is over. That's means no more people can get a ps3 on 17NOV.
Um....more serious problem is...
the price are actually mis-leading, because the shop with stock are seem to be forced (by sony) to sell the ps3 with 3 games. (RIDGE RACER 7, GENJI, MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM Target in Sight) and may be forced you to buy one more controller to get the ps3.
That means the price should be included (HKD$370(USD$47)(games) x 3 + HKD$320(USD$41)(controller)).
Finally the price should be around HKD$5200(USD$668) for ps3+3games+1controller.
Of course there should not be any stock on the 1st day for the people without reservation.
The 2nd-lot are said to be available in late Nov or early Dec. (Really...?!?)
The page for hk reservation...

Is this a place of reputable people or just cheapos? If you think importing one is cheap. Think again. Cost of shipping 1 unit. Then consider possible damage during shipping? Warranty? The same cheap people will try to return to their local SONY. Its not fair to return to SONY of your region when the product is outside of your region. Consider all and the price will be higher than $500-600 units. If you are that impatient, you'll drive the retailers insane with your nonstop emails. Just wait 2-3 weeks and supplies are going to be available. If you don't get a PS3 on launch date and your life is over, it should be. You have none to beging with. I myself like PS3 because SONY is game company. Superior Quality products speak for themselves. Give sony a break and yourself a life. Patience and you'll have a PS3. Simple, eh?
neko @ Nov 5th 2006 10:34PM
Hi for your information, we are not able to buy the console alone in HK. oh yes, the console cost only HK$3780 here, but you are forced to buy at least 3 more games and an extra sux_ass controller with it, which costing you at around HK$5300 or US$680 in total. what's more? all the pre-orders were sold out already, so travellers don't get too excited.
Loc @ Nov 6th 2006 4:19PM
dang my mom just came back from HK and china. Grr!!

ANyone know if PS3 from HK can be played in the USA then ? I have friends going to HK and want to make sure that the system will work in USA.
dailo @ Nov 13th 2006 2:11PM
Well, retailers in HK are asking HK$5000-8000 now... but APPARANTLY, we dont get a HK version of the PS3, only the Japanese version, which will only play region 2 dvd's, but will be compatible with american games, so looks like us in HK will be using the adaptors to convert up to 220V
Haroon @ Nov 16th 2006 8:52PM

im at hong kong as well, just went to some retailer shops recently and i didn't get any luck of finding any ps3 at all. Guys from HK, probably wanna list out some places other then Mong Kok or retailers stores so people can look for prices at those areas?

Where i can buy PS 3 in hong Kong for a good price that will be sutibele for use in Israel?
Ace71 @ Jun 21st 2007 4:39PM
The HK PS3 runs on 220-250V, if you are going to buy one in HK you should go to the electronic chain shops like Broadway, Citicall, Fortress and of course the offical Sony shops. They staff speak English, prices are displayed and they accept all kinds of credit cards if you don't have cash. Check out the HK Sony website for their prices and shops locations. The best one is in Monk Kok (Kowloon side) come out Monk Kok MTR Stn exit D3 look to your right and there should be a Fortress and a Lenscrafter shop, inbetween the 2 shops is an entrance/exit into a building/plaza. Enter and bear to the left where there is security manning the lifts go to the 9th floor & you will have arrived at the Sony shop.
Ace71 @ Jun 21st 2007 5:16PM
Sorry its Mong Kok not Monk Kok. Also the PS3 is sold in HMV & Toys R Us, there are independent shops as well check out the Golden Shopping Centre Sham Shui Po Stn exit D1 or if you are on HK Island side check out 188 Wan Chai Road, Wan Chai Stn exit A3, turn left on Johnston Rd, when the road split into 2 stick to the 1 to your right, watch out for the traffic especially the trams when crossing the road, walk for 5-8 mins and its the building/entrance next to 188. It maybe best to use an A-Z, these indie shops are best visited after midday as they open late and close late. The chain shops open from 10am to 11am and close 10pm to 11pm.

The black 60gb selling in Hk right now is $3,7500 HKD thats about $483.50 USD. No tax in hk, so thats all you pay. I heard that the new white color PS3 is releasing this Nov-11th 2007 in most game stores. Is a 20gb white PS3 selling for $2,680 HKD thats $345.54 USD. much cheaper then in the states. I think I'm going to buy a few and sell them on ebay. haha..
Taklun @ Oct 14th 2007 6:03AM
Ive just come back from HK and got my 80GB PS3 with 1 game and 2 controllers for $3400HKD and then I went out and bought a further 5 games for $1500HKD, so thats 80GB PS3 with wireless inet and 6 games for under $5000HKD (Just under £320).
I have applied 4 system updates since returning and it is working perfectly fine and have been gaming online with Ridge Racer 7, WSOP 08, GRAW2 perfectly fine. Only had problems connecting to the EA servers for Tiger08 but i think it maybe just a port forwarding problem.
Anyway I am delighted with my purchase and luckily my mate lives there, so I will be getting him to send me over games on a regular basis!

Hi,
Where did you purchase your PS3 from?
I will be arriving in HK on Friday 9th Nov 07 (next week) and I want to buy PS3 (60gb &80gb) where is the best/cheapest place to buy them and is there any restriction on how many units I can buy.
Any advice on the best place to buy them will be appreciated, I was thinking to buy from Sony Shop in Mongkok but I dont know if there are other cheaper places to buy.
Thanks for your help.

Hi, i'm HK at the mo looking for a PS3 but i'm having trouble finding a Jap model as i know this will work with games back home in England. Can anyone help me find one??
i looked in Mong Kok today (but not in the main computer centre, a different one that mainly did phones if anyone knows it) but all they had were HK models, which as far as i know aren't in the same region as UK so it'll be worthless if/when i take one back.
preferable i would like the new white 40gb model (not too bother about backwards compatibility) but as long as its Jap and not the 20gb im fine.
Cheers
