PlayStation 3 unboxed -- sorta
Well, it's a PlayStation 3 coming out a box, just not that box -- but we'll take what we can get 'till we actually get our own hands on one. These latest beauty shots come courtesy of the good folks at IGN who, undeterred by the plain cardboard box packaging their review unit arrived in, went through the ritual unboxing process anyway, also taking the opportunity to inaugurate a fingerprint-wiping technique we'll all soon be emulating. Check out one more pic after the break, then click through to IGN for the complete fold-by-fold action...

Those handwritten BD-R discs are making my palms sweaty...
Maytrix @ Oct 25th 2006 3:55PM
Hasn't Sony been touting the PS3 being THE High Def Gaming console?
I'm curious - How can you sell THE High Def Gaming console without a cable that will do High Def?
Rohit Kapur @ Oct 25th 2006 3:59PM
I think that's a component HD cable there.
mmagic @ Oct 25th 2006 4:12PM
because if you are buying a 600 dollar unit you would have enough money to buy the component cable at 15 dollars or hdmi cable at 30 dollars separate
Michael @ Oct 25th 2006 3:55PM
I won't buy one, but it sure would look nice sitting next to my TV...
g3n3tiX @ Oct 25th 2006 3:55PM
It's a pre-release version, but still looks great...
Fingerprint magnet though !
Maytrix @ Oct 25th 2006 4:08PM
I don't think so, based on their site. http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/specs.html
For HDMI, it lists to output in HD, HD cable is required. And for analog, it lists Analog multi-out x 1 - which would be the composite cable.
CharlieX @ Oct 25th 2006 3:59PM
whoo hoo! Composite cable power - activate!
joon @ Oct 25th 2006 4:08PM
is that two power cord?
mokujin9 @ Oct 25th 2006 5:25PM
It makes sense to only include a composite cable. Not everyone who will buy a PS3 has HDTV, so why make the prices higher for everyone? Some people will buy HDMI cables, some will buy component, and some might even go for DVI. Just bundling the standard composite cable is the best choice. Plus, Sony can earn revenue by providing these accessories on the side.
Reginald @ Oct 25th 2006 11:03PM
"Not everyone who will buy a PS3 has HDTV, so why make the prices higher for everyone?"
Umm, the PS3 is already highly priced. And, most people that can afford to drop $600 on a gaming machine probably have the money to also afford an HDTV.
It's just hypocritical of Sony to tout this new next-gen, HD, Blue-Ray this-and-that and not include an actual HD cable on which to enjoy the HD. Granted this is just a "demo" model but I doubt the base PS3 will even include one.
If I can buy an HDMI cable for about USD $60-$70 bucks -- retail, Sony can afford to subsidize one for probably USD $10-$15 -- wholesale. The PlayStation 3 is just so expensive. It just doesn't make sense.
Taylor @ Oct 25th 2006 4:11PM
So they DO exist! ;)

Typist @ Oct 25th 2006 4:11PM
First thing im gonna do when i open my PS3 box is throw away that composite cable; that should not be anywhere near the PS3.
PEZ @ Oct 25th 2006 4:29PM
That is a seriously big-ass blog photo. I need super-wide screen tefchnology just to read now! EeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeWwwwww.
DeShaun @ Oct 25th 2006 4:20PM
what HDMI cables have YOU been seeing?
You can pay 30 bucks if you never plan on having your system more than a foot away from your television, but if you have an entertainment center or something, forget it.
However, if you really do know of $30 hdmi cables of considerable length, shaaaare.
jason @ Oct 25th 2006 8:30PM
"finger print magnet" other than the open/close and the power button how much fondling of [any] console are you going to do?
are you the type of person Weird Al makes fun of in his "Too Nerdy" video with the popping bubbles?
Raider @ Oct 25th 2006 4:22PM
Exactly.
delerious @ Oct 25th 2006 4:16PM
I only see one HDMI port. Sony must've backed out on that promise.
Raider @ Oct 25th 2006 7:35PM
Maybe you are "delerious" as Sony has long ago said it was only going to have one HDMI.
MMagic @ Oct 25th 2006 10:57PM
sorry reply took so long you can get a 25 foot HDMI cable for 44 dollars

Eric M @ Oct 25th 2006 4:22PM
go to monoprice.com DeShuan. 6 foot cable for 7 bucks!
Raider @ Oct 25th 2006 4:24PM
I think it is very interesting there is no enormous power brick. Which means the power is internally held in the system itself. I think with such a big power brick, the Xbox 360 would have been the same size of the PS3 or even bigger. That is why they amassed a huge power brick, to make it seem smaller and make that ridiculous curvature.
The cables look to be, USB for controller, composite cables, ethernet cable, maybe two power cables. Why two power cables? Maybe they made a bunch of stock units for review and simply included two different types of plug connection power cables. After all, the story was written in the UK. So maybe a UK type connection and the US type connection cables.
Jon @ Oct 25th 2006 5:01PM
I cant believe there isnt a Uproar about no upscaling DVD's or PS1,2 Games .. Seems like some add on for $20 bucks down the road ..
mattie @ Oct 25th 2006 4:26PM
there's to many engadget readers who shop at best buy =
dov @ Oct 25th 2006 4:34PM
hahaha..
they got the stuff on burned discs..
nice start..
just painted the devil on the wall.. :D
Steve @ Oct 25th 2006 4:34PM
Umm, I'm sure I'm missing something here but looking at those pictures a couple of things jumped out at me. If you have it setup so that the PS3 logo is facing into the room (which would make sense owing to the shiny shiny surface) aren't all the cables going to be visible on the left side of the console? If you have it setup so that the unit is horizontal and facing you there should also be just enough of that very reflective top facing you to reflect the lights and be really bloody annoying.
I also REALLY can't understand why Sony didn't at least change the colour of the controller. It is after all the main contact point with a console and this just looks identical to the same old PS2 pad we've all come to know and love/hate (delete as appropriate).
Nate @ Oct 31st 2006 9:10AM
I can't help but be excited about this stuff. All I want is some awesome looking RPGs out on this baby and I will be set.
Assuming, that I can actually force myself and give in to the price.
Phil @ Oct 25th 2006 4:49PM
Did anyone else notice that they PS3 uses a 3 prong power cable like PCs use?
Bob @ Oct 25th 2006 4:55PM
So do my 360 any my plasma TV...what's your point?
Brian @ Oct 25th 2006 4:55PM
The PS3 is ugly but at least a couple of those guys are cute :)
Inferno @ Oct 25th 2006 5:01PM
This news isn;t comment worthy, however, I HAVE to say something to people who say,
"...if you are buying a 600 dollar unit you would have enough money to buy the component cable at 15 dollars or hdmi cable at 30 dollars ... Would you say the same if they didn't include a controller, or sold the power cord seperately? My point is, just because it is expensive, doesn't mean it shouldn't provide what it is designed for. In the PS3, which has been hyped as the "start of Next Gen", "the only True-HD console", blah HD blah HD blah... you expect, at the very least, component cable. The composite that come with the console only allow 480p. Which is less than what is capable on Xbox1. Less than my 2 year old $40 progressive DVD player. It is ridiculous. But hey, nickle and dime us, we can afford it right?
Mike @ Oct 25th 2006 4:59PM
I'll never give Sony a dime of my money - after what they did to lik-sang----
CharlieX @ Oct 25th 2006 5:00PM
If and when I get a Ps3, I'm going to take a disc sander to that shiny obscenity.
Rick Person @ Oct 25th 2006 5:03PM
YAWN...Can't say I'm all that impressed...The 360 looks more attractive and ergonomic....this looks like an amorphous lump of something
Jankylicious @ Oct 25th 2006 5:11PM
Thats a BIG bytch
steverl22 @ Oct 25th 2006 5:15PM
Monoprice with the $7 HDMI cables RULE!!
All those fools screaming about HD cables need to do some reseach, I rather have HDMI over VGA
Geoff @ Oct 25th 2006 5:16PM
I've had enough of Sony's BS. No more of their consumer electronics for me, ever. I realize all large corporations exaggerate in one form or another, but no one approaches Sony's all-around stance.
Remember E3? The only way they could steal Microsoft's thunder (and attract the media whores) was to announce that not only did they have HDMI (instead of the Xbox 360's component), but they had TWO of them for DUAL HD gaming. Then, not only did they have an Ethernet port, but they had THREE of them (functioning as a built-in hub) AND they had a built-in dialup modem.
As you can see, those features are nowhere to be found on the shipping product. Bald-faced lies to get a few lines of press from the hype machine. I'm through.
BrettB @ Oct 25th 2006 5:18PM
I actually think this thing looks WAY better than the 360. Sure, the white, grey, and green is unique, but that's because it's freaking ugly. No one else would dare use it. the shape and size of the 360 is hideous. And while this thing isn't perfect, if I had to chose 1 for my living room based soley on looks, this would win hands down. I think the polished finish adds some class to what is generally a classless category of electronics.
I've said my peace...
Balazs @ Oct 25th 2006 5:19PM
Interesting, I think the plug socket is a UK version. From what I can see it certainly seems that way based on the shape and size and the protector that is fitted over it. Weird even though it is supposed to come later to us in the UK.
So sony are being skanky and only giving us a composite cable. Its really stupid. Why hype up the console so much for its HD abilities when you have to spend $ out of the box to get it to run in HD. I see there is a Ethernet and USB cable, but what's the other one, I can't quite make out.
idk @ Oct 25th 2006 5:23PM
Geoff...
It's called a beta console for a reason.
It makes perfect sence why an HDMI cable wasn't included. What if someone's TV only has component? then they would bitch. If they included both HDMI and Component, then the system would go up in price, and those who don't use either would probebly trash the cable of lose it before they got a supported tV anyhow.
HDMI is not expensive, just go get one for 5-30 bucks and stfu.
Ben @ Oct 25th 2006 5:33PM
Review set with only 1 controller? :(
Multiplayer!!! (And don't any of you be smart and say about using existing PS" controllers, etc, etc :P)
Mark7r0n @ Oct 25th 2006 5:40PM
DAMN thats huge! Whats the scoope on load times for all this Blu-ray nonsense? Is it still reading at like 2x? I already have ADD meltdowns during current loadtimes, I can't wait any longer. I bet a year or so down the road we see a solid state HDD for the 360 since it is so easily upgradeable. Does no one think Sony is going to some how try to rip people off on the controller?? Why would you not put in a removeable battery of some sort? IT MAKES NO SENSE. Have they spoken to anyone in the real world about this console?
Dane @ Oct 25th 2006 6:34PM
not that its as good as having a removeable battery, but sony said theyll replace the controller free if the battery dies. its somethin...
Yem @ Oct 25th 2006 6:14PM
So I'm curious: how's the backward compatibility?
Has anyone put their PS2 game collection through this thing to see what's what?
phreak @ Oct 25th 2006 6:30PM
is that an avaya 2420 phone or 2410?
Manuel @ Oct 25th 2006 6:39PM
kinda looks like a extra polished atari to me ....
A Gupta @ Oct 25th 2006 6:41PM
Mmmmmm shiny. I wouldn't pay $600 for it, but maybe for $400 I'd snatch it up without thinking. Love the fact that it "can" play burned games - hope that's a feature that finds its way into production ;)
