Xbox 360 spring update bugs: got any?
So we've been fooling around with our Xbox for the last few days since we got the big spring '06 360 update, and we haven't really noticed any issues; everything has been downright snappy, and the new interfaces and options have been rather useful. But it might appear not everyone got off so luckily. According to MaxConsole and Xbox 360 Fanboy, a number of users are experiencing major issues with their 360, including problems with saving, freezing, skipping, or long load times in NHL 2k6, GRAW, Burnout, Half Life 2, and Oblivion -- but it sounds like the noise has died down a little. So now that we've had a little more time to really see what's up, what say you, 360 users? Any issues worth mentioning that seem out of the ordinary?

I haven't had any problems, aside from the occasional freezing when going in and out of multiplayer games in UNO. Other than that everythangs just fine. And playing music in Backwards Compat games are a huge plus.
zachary @ Jun 11th 2006 11:00PM
I'll be sure to check it out, when I get my 3rd Xbox 360 back from McAllen, Tx on tuesday.

I have noticed that my 360 freezes in dashboard and when using the guide after updating. Never happened before. It's not frequent enough for me to piss my pants over, however.
Martin @ Jun 11th 2006 11:14PM
Well im having long load times in call of duty as well and not to mention the longer download times of any marketplace software takes over a few hours which is unusual
dead phish head @ Jun 11th 2006 11:17PM
No problems here... yet
pelican @ Jun 11th 2006 11:18PM
ive just had the oblivion issue it takes a long time for it to load besides that everything works great, actually my 360 seemed to be slower when i use the 360 guide during a game and when i listen to voice messages
tsecam @ Jun 11th 2006 11:24PM
My friend's 360 died 20 minutes after the update. Microsoft said its gonna cost $150 to fix and was an "unfortunate coincidence". He's pissed and thinks it was the update.
sully @ Jun 11th 2006 11:29PM
Haven't noticed anything here - been playing DVDs all evening.
shawn @ Jun 11th 2006 11:30PM

Mine died a couple hours after updating, fought with microsoft over the phone and a couple days later they agreed to fix it for free. I was out of warranty but now have a new warranty till Sept!
sputnik @ Jun 12th 2006 12:02AM
No problems here...really enjoying all the new features. Still finding some of them by accident here and there.
Kyle @ Jun 12th 2006 12:07AM
No problems here.

I've had the GRAW long load time and freezing problems (once every 5 hours). Other than that it has been a great update.
Raffi @ Jun 12th 2006 12:12AM
No problems here yet either.

Let's compare the amount of people who have no problems, to people with problems.
Makes sense for people to report problems, not successes

My 360 has frozen a few times after the update. It happens when I play Call of Duty and I accidentally push the "ring of light" on the controller pad. I can still hear the other players online, but I can't do anything ie. play the game or get outta the menu.
PS3 Fanboi @ Jun 12th 2006 12:48AM
Hope the P$3 does not go through any of these problems!
But hay, its 21st century technology.
Rik @ Jun 12th 2006 12:49AM
No problems what so ever, SONY has really gotten desperate
asurroca @ Jun 12th 2006 12:55AM
I got the update as soon as it came out, and I've had no bugs so far, after hours of Oblivion addiction and tons of downloads--I'm downloading like 10x more now that downloading content is no longer a pain.
godWHYme @ Jun 12th 2006 1:12AM
Basically i have had 3 major problems since the update, 2 of which my just my stuff on my end and one is annoyance.
1. My xbox 360 doesn't load the last arcade game i played first which i know is a stupid thing to biatch about but it is part of the release, and still zuma which is becoming the number one game played on my system slowly still loads last for me. Which is frustrating because i have 10 games.
2. More 360 lock ups i have had 2 since the update and none with the system before other than with burnout revenge. I have played burnout once since the update and it was after the 2 crashes.
3. Accepting game invites for some games, they just haven't loaded right, I had someone send me an invite three times and I could never get in to a cod2 room.
falcindor @ Jun 12th 2006 1:18AM
Im getting my Xbox360 back from TX on Tuesday. It better be one of the new quiet faster ones. MS is getting me for $129 when WalMart never offered me a warrenty. By the way it was a harware error. MS covers their behind by not diagnosing the problems. MS says if they run a scan on hardware and there a problem they replace the entire product. That way they never really diagnose the problem and dont ackknowledge their defect.
K @ Jun 12th 2006 1:25AM
No problems playing COD2 or GRAW. [:
Kevin @ Jun 12th 2006 1:56AM
I've had PGR 3 lock up a couple times since the update and it never did it before. Also seems to log out of Live randomly sometimes.
HK Dude @ Jun 12th 2006 1:58AM
Battlefield 2 Freezes at the end of the online mode game. This happens once in every 5-8 games.
neale @ Jun 12th 2006 2:04AM
i cant when listening and browsin through music go into the artist and look at the songs. its driving me crazy. i can look in genre, album etc and find individual songs to add to a playlist, but i cant do arist>songs without playing every single song. really annoying
my 360 is making a differnet noise now when slowing discs down, first it sounds like its stopping them complelty and it sort of grinds, then does a weird vibrating noise until i eject it. the discs come out untouched though. dunno if its anything to do with the update or just pure coincidence. but here in the UK we get 12months free warranty so if its gonna die it better do it within the next 6 months
S.A. @ Jun 12th 2006 2:09AM
I havent seen any problems at all. Then again, I really havent played more than a couple hours.
Russ @ Jun 12th 2006 2:15AM
The day I did the update I experienced my one and only freeze on my 360. It was especially frustrating since I had my highest score going on bedazzeled when it froze! The Xbox froze and I had to shut it off and turn it back on...
d33d @ Jun 12th 2006 2:53AM
So far so good for me, it does seem more snappy. I wonder what the issue is for some people. The background downloading has been great!
Joe Siegler @ Jun 12th 2006 2:55AM
Yeah, since the update, I'm getting disc read problems when not a single one happened since I got the 360 on Jan 1st till the update.
It's mostly happened with MLB 2k6, which is ironic, given that title's problems on it's own, without disc read problems.
Mawdsley @ Jun 12th 2006 2:57AM
DVD Playback is pants. It gets stuck on some DVDs and there is a 5 second wait while it reads the disc. No probs with the disc itself (both visually and on other players). I even had one disc replaced the first time it happened and the replacement got stuck in the exact same place.
Not exactly a spring update bug, but since then I do get a nice little message telling me its reading the disc. :(
Marty @ Jun 12th 2006 3:48AM
I still get my e74 errors, i havent bothered to call tech support about it yet because i just need to turn it on and off a few times to fix it. i logged a error about it on the web site but they told me to call the US, even after telling them i live in australia. Twice.
Also my controller seems to disconnect on occasion when im playing hitman blood money. it may have to do with my mobile phone being too close?
I probably will end up calling tech support about it tomorrow or something. Does anyone actually have a list of what changed?
Dispraiser @ Jun 12th 2006 4:09AM
Burnout is still taking forever to load, but that's not because of the update - it always took for god damned ever!
I just got my Xbox a few days before the update, so I didn't get too use to the old features. The new ones are a lot better than the old ones, though, I think.
The Background downloads are worth it, alone, that's a REAL convenience for downloading MASSIVE demos. That feature is one of the best things about the 360, that I can play pretty functional demos of dozens of games for free.
Jason @ Jun 12th 2006 4:28AM
My bug is sort of a nice one. If I'm playing music on the dashboard, then start up an original Xbox game, the music keeps playing. I have no way of controlling that music, which can be annoying when playing something like Halo 2 that has no way of cutting off the original game's soundtrack. But I love this bug when playing San Andreas.
Pc_Madness @ Jun 12th 2006 4:57AM
PGR3's performance is really terrible now after the update.. if you try to play multiplayer and add a harddrive based account, it will sit there for about a minute thinking about it. (unless its just my box being dodgy)
And music now plays in the dashboard and most games, however if you start up PDZ, the Microsoft and Rare video's will cut out the sound, which will resume playback after their finished.
I've had a few more random lock ups than I'm used too :(
Niklas @ Jun 12th 2006 5:06AM
I have big problems with Oblivion. It is really really slow and I wait more then I play. I am considering returning that game.
I also found a bug when I download demos, the box tells me that I need to set my settings to PAL60 in order to play, but since I all ready is in HDTV mode this is not a option.
Most other games work really well!
Gabe @ Jun 12th 2006 5:27AM
NBA 2K6 freezes more than usual now, once every 3 games, not cool, not cool! Besides that everything else has been fine. Strange thing is, when 2k6 loads i see a line of gray (about a third of the screen, at the top) with code on it, WTF?
The Capester @ Jun 12th 2006 5:51AM
After installing the dashboard update I found that all my 360 games saves had gone but my arcade and old xbox game saves were still there.
Alexander @ Jun 12th 2006 6:29AM
I still have the problem with Half Life 2. It loads just before the main menu, freezes and then the screen turns black. I can't return to the dashboard or make the 360 react in any way! It is really annoying.
I have called 360 support and they are looking into the problem, but I think I will call them again soon...
James ferretti @ Jun 12th 2006 7:03AM
When I tuen on the 360 my Dashboard slowly stutters into action, taking a few seconds to become resposive. It never used to stutter liek this, Pretty anoying.
Blue_Six @ Jun 12th 2006 7:06AM
I realized one major glitch yesterday and it did piss me off significantly:
My 360 lags very notably and skips when playing back hi-def videos, whereas that of course worked like a charm before the update.
It happens whenever there is a large color/motion change in a video, for example in the Halo 3 teaser, while a scene is running, everything is smooth as silk, then a banshee would suddenly fly passed the camera and the video would stutter and lag for a few seconds until the box has "accustomed" itself to the new scene. When the screen goes black towards the end, the video would COMPLETELY FREEZE for 5 seconds while the audio keeps on running, then suddenly the video would catch up to the sound.
It's annoying as hell and happens during ALL my 720p videos. The Mission Impossible 3 trailer with it's many fast cuts has become nearly "impossible" to enjoy at all.
I figured this might be background downloading or some live activity, but it happens even when offline.
Also, it was promised that the gamer-tags' or arcade games' list was supposed to load faster when accessed, it still takes a considerable ammount of time for me.
And even worse when signing into a profile that has a theme loaded...
With all due respect to the nice changes brought by the update, big thumbs down in view of these new or still existing "bottlenecks"... =(
Anybody else notice any glitches in HD Video playback? I would REALLY appreciate if you could just maybe, look at some of your's and post here if it's A-OK or not...
Thanks in advance,
Blue_Six
heh @ Jun 12th 2006 7:16AM
Personally i think its just a small majoriry shouting about it.
pezyo @ Jun 12th 2006 7:27AM
I have a large music playlist (around 700 songs) that gets truncated when switching from the dashboard to a game or vice-versa. The music keeps playing, but the playlist will be much shorter after switching from one to the other.
Bill Schlosser @ Jun 12th 2006 7:32AM
Shortly after downloading the update my XBOX froze- which it has NEVER done before- then I tried turning it on again- it came up, then froze 5 minutes later. This time when I turned it back on I got the 3 red ROL... In talking with the service rep (they are sending me the empty box UPS Will Call thing) He said they have had a RASH of call in's with the same problem!
John @ Jun 12th 2006 8:12AM
Randomly getting booted from Xbox live. Major lag on COD2 (playing with friends I used to have no problems with pre-patch) Oblivion freezing, really slow on load and save screens. MotoGP has frozen a couple of times, but I never got this game till after the patch anyway so I don't know if it's 'typical'!
Haven't noticed any problems with PG3 or GRAW although I don't play them much online.
GhostDoggy @ Jun 12th 2006 8:22AM
Has anyone tested the usb keyboard support yet?
Nihls @ Jun 12th 2006 8:27AM
I have had multi issues now with Madden 06 freezing (I was losing at the most recent time) and NHL 06 freezing (I was winning in the most recent freeze) also I had severe menu problems in madden 06, the menu displayed through other text making some fields in the play selection menu unreadable.
