PlayStation 3 will ship with 60GB HDD as standard

This week when Sony came clean about the PS3 delay they also mentioned that an upgradeable 60GB hard drive would be coming to at least some units, but they've now confirmed that 60GBs will be standard and upgradeable from there. This is according to Yahoo! Games, and we're not clear if you'll be required to purchase and upgrade a 60GB model, or if larger capacities will be available bundled from the get go, but this does mean that developers are at least guaranteed a decent bit of hard drive space to play around with. It all lines up with Sony's media centric ideas for the PS3 as well, but there's no word on how this will affect the pricing for the console that has already been rumored -- however wrongly -- as astronomical.

It would be a good thing to make it standard. That way the developers can count on it being there, whether they use it or not. That is not the luxury with some of 360 units, since there are still a few out there with no HD. The developers can incorporate HD features without worrying about making their games be able to work with non-HD systems. Which makes them cut HD features out of games.

Plus if they do put in a HD. It won't be that much more expensive than a 360. If you factor in the $100-150 HD DVD attachment needed to watch HD movies. Which the PS3 will have Blu-Ray built-in. Also makes it look like a cleaner system.

I think I finally understand why people say Xbox 1.5 ...for the first time Sony will finally have a HD, Good Graphics and Online Play...these are features that the Xbox had all along. So the Xbox to the 360 was not as big a leap as the PS2 will be making going to PS3.

But need I remind everyone that Sony has had a horrible online offering so far and no one should be giving them any credit for announcing an online service until we see them deliver the goods. Expectations are very high, now that they have a HD, supposed Online Play. If the PS3 cost more than the 360 people will be looking to get more all around. Better Graphics, better Online Experience etc. Many developers have already announced that the 360 will be their default development platform. Last generation the PS2 was the default development platform which totally sucked as it was by far the worst of all the platforms (Xbox, GameCube, PC).

It remains to be seen what developers can achieve on a PS3 that would set it apart from the 360. Sony would like as all to think that PS3's graphics will be far superior than 360, but that's going to come around and bite them in the ass when everyone realizes what developers already know and have been saying for months...that is that PS3 and 360 graphics and capabilities are pretty much on par with each other.

Well, I think I will get one after a price drop b/c of the Linux thing. It would be nice to have a capable linux machine to play around with.

poster #9, I agree with most of what you are saying.

I'm currently working on both 360 and PS3 multi-platform games and I can tell you this; there won't be any difference in graphics quality in majority of games simply because most games are released as multi-platform titles. There'll be only a very few number of games that will take advantage of PS3's supposed "superior" graphical performance, which by account of many, isn't all that it's cracked up to be in the first place.
At first, there may be a few developers that would tweak their multi-platforms games specially for PS3 for the PS3 launch as some sort of "special edition", but the novelty will soon wear off and everyone will use Xbox 360 as their default machine to stamp out quality across the board. In game industry, the lowest common denominator rules over the highest common denominator. And how little the quality difference there may be between 360 & PS3, Xbox 360 is still a lower end machine and that's enough reason to make it the default machine for most developers.

I still think a $499 base price would be suicide. I don't think Sony would risk dominating the next video standard like that. It'll be $399, and Sony will lose a bundle on each one...but to them, it's worth it if Blu-ray becomes standard.

Everybody seems te have forgotten the Xbox360 has a detachable HD, and it takes Microsoft a snap of a finger to upgrade it to 60 GB or more, whatever real signifcant functional difference that would make. I mean it's not that 60 GB turns a console into an amazing media center device, therefor at least 160 GB would be desirable.

You may be or not be, but whatever. I think what everyone should keep in perspective about the difference in quality of games means jack when it come to actually playing the same game on different systems (damn developers are always too lazy to ever change much), also remember the fact that both the Xbox 360 and ps3 right now are only showing first-gen games and should not be the basis for any comparison yet on the graphical capabilities of the two machines. The main benefit for Sony (and developers) for the HDD is that they can sell content on it. Such as the previously announced PSOne games that will be playable on the PSP and PS3. Along with other content (downloadable games, music, movies, extras, expansion packs, etc etc.).

I'm sure Sony plans on subsidizing the cost of the drives with what it expects to get from customers purchasing downloadable content. Since Sony plans on buying tens of millions of drives the cost should be around $30-50 for a single platter 2.5" drive bought in bulk. I'm expecting a PSone game to cost around $10-20, and downloadable gaming content could massively benefit Sony (imagine all the great PSone games there are).

Also consider what MS has done with Geometry wars, by the HDD being standard that opens a larger user base for such DL games, and having connectivity with the PSP would allow users to take their downloaded game on the road. Not to mention the back catalog of games that developers could port over from Dreamcast, Saturn, SNES, etc that can be distributed online and playable on both the PS3 and PSP.

There is a massive digital distribution potential with the HDD being standard, and that is likely a much bigger reason on having it standard than having games cached to the HDD.

#2 Well, Sony will lock this Console down as hard or harder then what Microsoft does with their Xbox 360. So, you got a machine, running Linux? on a Cell-CPU. But it's not a Work-station. We will see if someone will manage to hack the PS3.

I had some thought about the shape of the PS3. Dones't it look like a re-born Bean? ;) At first, I thought that the design was realy cool. But now, I don't know anymore. It's ok, not super sexy.

Lets not forget if its running linux, Sony are going to have to publish the source for the linux workstation part of it - that will be pretty sweet. I'm guessing there'll be a Sony proprietary OS that runs the games and linux for other stuff. I can't really see Sony being open with everything.

It doesn't realy metters since both Blu-ray and HD-DVD are the next "standars". All companies will release players that can handle both Blu-ray and HD-DVD. But I guess the the player in the PS3 will be Blu-ray only. It will help the spread the Blu-ray format, sure, but both sides have lost the format-war. It's over.

#17, Sir, you're right on the nose about your comment. Sony will have it's proprietary OS for games and Linux will be a separate entity. Too bad Sony isn't as versed in SW like M$ and too bad M$ isn't as good at HW. If they developed a gaming system together... that would have been a kick ass!

Someone please hurry up and develop something akin to iMovie for Cell Linux. This used to be Apple turf but now that we have such capable multimedia processor in our favorite game machine along with processing power of Nvidia, people who do not care about games will flock to buy this machine. It plays the next generation disk format, available for your guest for their entertainment needs, and last but not least, a $500 "Entertainment Supercomputer" that can easily beat dualcore G5.

#12, believe me or not, it's your choice, but there are real people behind making these games. People who are working on 360 and PS3 games do browse the net and participate in discussions like this. It's not like game developers are hermits huddled up in their dark rooms afraid to come out until games get released.

and as for the 720P vs. 1080P comment made on post #21, I'm sure PS3 exclusive titles like like MGS4 will be designed from ground up to be optimized for 1080P and once it comes out, it's going to look amazing.

But, not every game on PS3 will come STANDARD with 1080P. Many games will still be displayed as 720P or 1080i, and on top of that quite a lot (majority of multi-platform titles) will actually be made with 720P art assets and simply be upconverted to 1080P when being displayed; just like how many PC games are optimized for 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024 resolutions yet still supports even higher resolutions like 1600x1200, etc.

Also, keep in mind that only 2% or so of HDTVs currently out there are capable of displaying 1080P, which means 1080P is pretty uselessly for most consumers for quite some time.

It seems like most people just assume that their TV will be able to display 1080P, even though there are only a miniscule number of HDTVs that are capable of doing that. (it gets even microscopic if you count in analogue TVs).
The question is, will you be purchasing an expensive brandnew 1080P HDTV set just to experience PS3's 1080P capabilities??

I am definitely going to buy a PS3, but the answer to the question is definintely a big NO. I am satisfied with my current projector setup, which can only display 720P, and once I get my hands on a PS3, 720P will be the only resolution that I'll be running my PS3 games. It's just not an option for most people, and I'd say that applies to about 90% of gamers out there.

To clarify my comment (21), the PS3 should already outperfom the 360 by a factor of 2 or 3 on account of 720p-vs-1080p alone, so I think it shouldn't have much trouble besting the 360. And if, as sony says, that every game will be rendered at 120fps (grain of salt), then HOLEE... It WILL be a supercomputer

#7 - Re: Xbox 360 vs. PS3 in terms of graphics power. Read the specs of both systems side-by-side. It would seem that in terms of raw speed the PS3 is much stronger. However, whether or not the game is actually fun is what really counts; graphics quality is only one part of the game, and you have a point that game developers probably aren't going to make every single game they make push the Cell to the limit. It would be impractical and unneccessary as I'll explain below. It also makes sense that not every game will be written with 1080p TV owners in mind; while I don't have any reliable numbers in front of me, it does seem reasonable that not many people have the best of the best technology at this point and that most people's HDTVs have lower HD resolutions. Are there even any HD broadcasts in 1080p yet? Hopefully this will become more ubiquitous as technology progresses, and if Sony does indeed get a ten-year life span out of this console as they've said they hope to (http://theconsolewars.blogspot.com/2005/07/ps3-will-have-10-year-lifespan.html) then they have the time to wait for the technology to mature. Whether or not their wish is granted is a whole other issue.

It's quite an interesting and welcome change to see Nintendo so boldly take a step in a different direction. If the concepts and ideas they are presenting with the Revolution comes to fruition and proves itself, maybe the gaming industry will be more willing to go further out on a limb than they seem to be. Not that one can blame them; isn't the average cost of a game in the tens of thousands of dollars? Many cost ten times that, some even a hundred times. That's a big risk to take on a game that might just be a dud. Here's what I'm thinking. Sony says Linux.Sony says 60GB ( upgradable?). You think MS couldn't have put a higher capacity drive in the 360? What if Vista plays nice with the 360 and lets users download games/movies that are locked down over xboxlive and store them on any networked Vista Machine's Hard drive( that you can add GB to)? Kinda makes that 60 GB disc look silly. What if Vista and Sony's flavour of Linux on PS3 don't play nice? What if Sony is thinking they'll drop some vaio's with the Sony flavour of Linux and consumers will snap them up. I know it's out there but it goes along with Sony's arrogant stance about owning the whole system ( hence all the consumer $)I don't think it would succeed for Sony but I can see it happening.

you will find the 1080p will be for still pics and maybe possible movie playback.
Games developers have also stated they will be programming ps3 games at 720p. which is the best HD resolution for game given its ability to push higher refresh rates.

So the PS3 will come with a Linux operating system pre-installed on the Hardrive, does this mean we will be able to use a PS3 like a PC at home i.e. surf the net, download music/movies/games, hook-up a USB keyboard & mouse & do some speadsheets on it?

If so that would be fantastic, a secure & stable Linux based supercomputer in my living room, and affordable ($400-$500).

This could be a very good thing for Linux too, with another possible 200 million housholds using Linux within the next 4-5 years.

#29, Xbox360-Vista marriage will provide better entertainment center combination than Sony's Linux on PS3? I'd hope so considering you'll probably need quad SLI, 4GB memory, dual core CPU setup to run VISTA on your computer, and then your file tranfer will occur wirelessly (unless your computer's right next to TV an unlikely setup in most household or at least on the same floor).

So 60G HDD not enough for you? Try an external HDD. PS3 has more than enough USB ports to satisfy your storage needs.

Yes, Sony did not live up to its spring launch date and yes, initially there may be little difference in game's native resolution compared to X360, but as Ken Kutaragi said, your're getting an "Entertainment Supercomputer". PS3 has more than enough USB ports to support external HDD, keyboard, mouse, webcam, ...

PS3 may not initially have games that use Cell's full potential considering development $'s and schedule involved. But what will use Cell's multimedia potential to its max is its Linux system. Today you can get a dualcore Power Mac G5 system for multimedia editing, rendering, etc. for ~3k. Cell, which was designed specifically for multimedia use, will be on par with G5. PS3 may be $100 more than X360 with HDD, but its WELL worth the cost considering its capabilities.

And yes, M$ should be really afraid now. We had never had this level of Linux adaptation in common household. This may be the end of Windows PC purchases...

If Sony new LIVE network allows you to download full PS1 & PS2 games than the disc drive is useless. If Sony allows downloadable movies than the disc drive is completely useless.

Im not so much a fan boy of nintendo but i do love what the company has done with games and how we see them today. Nintendo has created the controller and eliminated the need for the out of date joystick (thank god) and introduced us to the anologue stick on all of our controllers. Im worried that sony might dominate the games industry with the playstation 3, as they dont come up with any original ideas.For example Sony saw that the N64 had an anologue stick and put 2 on there own controller marketing it as a leap forwards in gaming when there competitor had already done it. This also included the rumble function on playstations controller as well, which was taken from the N64 as well. What with the xbox 360 now having a hard drive sony have done the same and added more memory. If sony wins the console wars again, with the new generation of consoles we could all be playing unoriginal boring games, because of lack of competition. I wish MS and ninendo the best with there consoles and hope that they provide us with great gaming that sony will proberly copy.

#36- Where are you getting those specs for Vista? Outta your ass. That's where. If you bought/made a pc in the last few years you'll be ok (or MINOR upgrades to your graphics chip and ram at the most...quad SLI my ass.) And what's wrong with streaming your media around your house wirelessly? I have my Media server connected to my main HDTV right now. It streams to the other sets/puters/360 in my house wirelessly.

#40- I agree. If sony lets you DL full movies to store on your PS3 HDD that's cool. But why would I buy a blu-ray disc then you ask? Because you 60gb(expandable) can only hold so much data. Especially if it must hold saves/music/pictures/ because Sony Linux won't play nice with Vista. And like it or not...Vista is gonna be on the majority of computers...not Sony Linux...unless Sony drops Sony Linux Vaios and you pay that Sony premium for it. Then maybe PS3 can play the network storage game for game DL's and Movie DLs.

#43/44-Steve-O: Are you serious? How can any consumer be any OS Fanboy? A huge % of the worlds computers run a version of windows. Are they all MS fanboys? No. Is my accountant an MS fanboy because he likes to give me Exel Spreadsheets instead of open office?No. Am I gonna be able to run Adobe CS or Macromedia on a proprietary Sony Linux? No(and don't tell me Gimp is just as good). The programs we use and own are programmed for windows machines, so we buy Windows OS. If you think Sony's flavour of Linux isn't gonna be locked down you are kidding yourself. Now....That said if it CAN network with Vista( or xp for those who don't upgrade for a while) that will just make the presumed dominance of the 60GB over the 20GB in the 360 a moot point as your HD in your home server will have all the space you could need.
Firewire/USB Drives add a question though. That Drive would need to be formatted. Can a drive be formatted with the Sony Linux via a PS3? What about from a Winows Machine? Who knows, maybe Sony will ship PS3 with their OS on a disc and people in the know can dual boot machines in windows and Sony OS! My main point is that people should not jump to the conclusion that "OMG PS3 has 60GB Standard and 360 only has 20=PS3 is better". I guess we will find out in November.Hopefully sooner.

big ice d, agreed. Only time will tell and we'll see in November. Remember. IBM is not the only company who has manufacturing rights on the Cell chips. Propagation of "Cell" Linux is in all 3 company's best interest.

I say this again. PS3 opened the door to the widest availability of Linux OS in common household. It is in Sony, Toshiba, and IBM's interest, for people to really take advantage of the open source and it won't be long until people will start buying Cell Linux workstations after trying Linux in Cell. It may take some time until open source community to develop some really cool stuff. The possibilities are endless here.

Perhaps it will stand a good fighting chance to M$ dominance. Perhaps not. You may like having your computer as a separate piece and do all your web surfing, etc. on your Windows PC. If today's Linux can already network with Windows PC, I don't see why PS3 will limit its capabilities. But then again, we'll find out in November...

Yeah but the bulk of those battles were won by instalbase and default offerings. Not by a superior product. Microsoft has to wage war on even terms this time.

#48, Yes, most of those battles were already decided for M$ when they were included in all new systems as default and monopolizing the whole selection process. Choice and competition is always good for the customers.
