Sony DCR-SR100 Handycam hard drive camcorder

Here are some more specs and hands-on pics of the Sony DCR-SR100 Handycam, Sony's first hard drive camcorder we saw earlier tonight at Sony's press preview. The camcorder's got a 3.0 megapixel imager and 30GB of drive space. The unit records in 5.1 channel Dolby Surround Sound, with the optional ECM-HW1 Bluetooth mic to cover the center channel (pictured below). It also shoots 3 megapixel stills and sports PictBridge compatibility. Viewing duties are handled by its 2.7-inch TFT LCD, and they're keeping us in the dark on price and release date because they love to torture us like that.

If it isn't 3CCD, I don't want to know about it...
stella @ Jan 5th 2006 1:19AM
does it work with iMovie, final cut express and final cut pro? a previous JVC hard disk based camera i bought didn't, so i had to return it.
Peter F @ Jan 5th 2006 1:30AM
Yes it works with iMovie.
C'Mon it doesn't have to be 3CCD.
And I too have been waiting for a camcorder like this for recording concerts, but I definitly do not have the mula, I guess I'll rely on Google Ads--check out my site.

Peter,
What lets you know that it's compatible with iMovie? Maybe it's too early and I'm blind, but I don't see any type of recording format mentioned or compatibility info.
What video format does it record to?
Thanks.

this camera records mpg2,but unlike other hdd cameras the suffix is .mpg alowing wide support for editing suites.
direct DVD burning(button on the inside of screen area) is provided for owners of Vaio.
this camera will be a hit for sony.

wow a device from sony that doesn't use their own stupid proprietary storage solutions, this is too good to be true
Nogami @ Jan 5th 2006 3:07AM
Interesting, but if it doesn't support native DV recording (or an on-the-fly MPG>DV conversion), it's utterly useless for anything but consumer-level video.
I'm still waiting for a camera with the ability to slot-in 2.5" HDs (up to 100gb) for direct recording in the DV25 (or DV50?) format. That would be absolutely invaluable.

If it's proprietary media or not only matters if it's removable media. They like their proprietary formats too though. This will probably record in ATRAC video. Or not.
brandon @ Jan 5th 2006 11:39AM
does anyone know or have a good estimate on how much video this camera can take on the 30GB drive?

This looks like it might be a nice little camera, but it's a SONY!!!! so who cares!
Sony is not on my shopping list and probably wont be for quite a few years. (most likely forever).
There are just TOO MANY reasons to list here, but until they get their collective heads out of their a&%es I AIN'T BUYING!!!

"If it isn't 3CCD, I don't want to know about it..."
This is an ignoramus comment. How many 'CCDs' does a Canon EOS-1DsMkII have? Does it take fine images? If it took 24 or 30 of those images a second would you want it? Snap out of it. 3-CCDs is dead.

In the above excerp, the words 'The camcorder has' would be more appropriate. Hire someone with better writing skills.

Harddrive? Hmmmm, I wonder about the quality and how much of a beating this harddrive can take? We all know how long mainframe or laptop hardrives last. Hardrives are usually 5yrs or less, typically 3 on average. For the money, I wonder again. I'm not debating the quality and features of Sony products as I own several, but am wary at this point. Who is the mfg. of the harddrive and what type of a rewritable disc is it? I'd love to own one, but these questions are valid. Thanx.
