CoolIT Systems' liquid-cooled Xbox 360 rig
You know, it occurs to us that between the overheating power supply and
excruciatingly loud DVD drive (which is becoming increasingly notorious for scratching discs), liquid-cooling the Xbox
360 core isn't exactly the highest on our list of concerns. If your 360 works, it works, if it's crashing, well, then get it replaced. But what the
hell, you were extravagant enough to crack into the ol' piggy bank for a a grand or so to pick one up on eBay, so might
as well at least consider doing that 360 the favor of liquid cooling that three-core processor it's got. No word in
CoolIT's release about how they actually plan to sell the rig or kit or whatever it is they've done though (pictured is
one of their CPU coolers), so don't be too bummed if this is more just a proof-of-concept and not a marketable
solution.[Via The Inq]

Loks sweet but i dont think its gonna be cheap. Ones for pc's are 200$ and up.
My Question is do we really need one for the xbox 360, I mean it's the powerbrick that seems to be overheating .... not the xbox360 itself... at least thats' been my experience...
I guess though it depends on the game your playing too because so far the games are not really taking advantage of the 3 processor's and are not really pushing the system, but games in the future will... so maybe then a cooling system like this will be a must have... (if you like to play for a long period of time, and i'm sure we all do)
As in my expirence as well, it is the external power supply that is overheating as well, and leaving it on the floor only crashes the system in madden '06 for me. Once it is elevated it is not a problem for me. I did hear rumors though that microsoft is considering to modify future versions of the 360 with more heat pipes to send the heat off of the processor and video card nearer to the rear fans. Because remember, if you modify your console yourself you viod all the warrenties on it.
Personally, i think that if microsoft does this they should compensate people that dont have the system with either a mail in to get your existing console fitted with this system, or an extended warrenty period for free.
I dont get this, my Power supply doesn't even get barely warm, I played for over 3 hours and decided to touch the supply assuming it would at least be a bit hot but it wasn't even warm!!
Well James, there are morons that let their powerbricks sit on the carpet and there are those with enough brain cells to keep it off the floor. There are those that don't get their precious Xbox 360 game discs scratched. Either be more careful with them or take preventive measures by buying some d_skins for their games.
People these days tend to take very little if any responsibility for their own actions and inactions. They like to blame others for their own stupid mistakes. Let's blame Microsoft for not making a powerbrick that has a built in cooling fan and a warning buzzer letting us know that it is overheating. Let's also blame Microsoft for not installing an anti-shock mount for the DVD drive because we can't help but kick the Xbox 360 around like a ball so that we scratch the crap out of the discs.
My power supply gets real hot, and very hot after about 3 or 4 hours of play. However, because I read the forums before setting it up, I was able to avoid the overheating issue. I suspended mine with wire on each end, and hung it on two hooks at the top shelf, xbox below. My unit gets hot too. I do think MS should do something to resolve this, and I also agree they should take care of the rest of us. I hate having to be so carefull. Didn't they do any testing at all??? My guess is that MS will replace all first version through warrenty, over the next few years. meanwhile, they will have fixed the problem.
James,
So the typical console power supply that gets tossed behind the entertainment center isn't so typical anymore? Think again.
And if you think I'm gonna tiptoe around a console so it doesn't jiggle it, once more, think again.
MS fscked up on a few things, fanboi, stop trying to defend them on it.
Mine doesn't overheat---but it is way too damn loud. At least twice as loud as the old Xbox. It's not the drive that is loud in mine, its fans.
I heard the only way discs are getting scratches is if people move the console around while the disc is playing. I guess I can see someone accidentally knocking it over, but if youre intentionally moving your console around while a disc is spinning--I dont' think that's really a Microsoft problem.
All of these reports of X360 overheating, freezing up, and scratching discs are overblown. Frankly those who fuel this fanboy haterism are pathetic. If you own a X360 that is supposedly doing all this, then you are most desrving if you haven't returned it already. Every system ever launched has had a percentage of units that were defective. This by no means support the general consensus in here that the X360 design is flawed and should be redesigned or that MS was careless.
I have a X360 and it runs flawlessly. The powerbrick is placed on a carpeted ground BEHIND my entertainment center, big ass tv, and I live in city that experiences mostly hot temperature cpnditions. With all these elements, it can get warm behind my center, yet my X360 or the its power supply hardly become warm after extended use. There are 2 gamers in my household so my X360 is getting a workout and it has yet to exhibit any of these "problems."
I know several other owners who use theirs more than mine, made inquires to the countless masses I've played with online AND NOBOBY is experiencing hardware issues. Of course, I'm only one person exposed to a small percentage of owners. But if the problem was as widespread as these idiots would have others believe, I would have met someone with problems by now.
Bottom line, shut the FU w/ this X360 defects BS already. The system is fine, it works great, and there is nothing that needs to change. If your unit is defective, call customer support or return it.
One more possible reason for FREEZUPS you're ISP. I have noticed a couple of game failures that seem to be coincideing with my ISP COMCAST haveing intermittent failures of their service. When I disabled the automatic logon to XBOX live problem went away. LUV this console though. I am glad Microsoft pushed their design to the bleeding edge of the technologie. Better than haveing some watered down totally safe underpowered wimpy game machine. To the fan boys; you better hope that PS3, with it's similar power requirements, doesn't end up being known as POS3. You will be eating a lot of crow down the road.
I just picked up an Xbox 360 tonight. I've been playing Perfect Dark Zero for the past 3 hours. I've played the original Xbox and it was pretty quiet. However, this one leaves me with concern. The graphics are unbelievable, but I feel the fan noise takes away from the gaming experience. I own an alienware and that isn't as noisy as the 360. Are there any others out there who have purchased a 360 within the past month and are having similar incidents?
