Quake gets ported to the cellphone
We're officially starting the meme that it's not a real platform until the following list of applications have been
ported to it: Hello World, Vi/Emacs, Pong, Tetris, and Doom. Oh, and now Quake. That's right, it's time to check yet
another off the list for cellphones since the fellas at id Software have apparently prepped a mobile version of the
classic 3D shooter so you'll never have to go without the giddy feeling of busting undead hellish death knights' heads
while living your busy on the go go go lifestyle.
[Thanks, Fred]
P.S. No, we're not talking about about the already existing smartphone ports of Quake, neither.

It has existed for quite some time already.
SPVQuake is a port of the PocketPC port of the released (GPL) sourcecode to the rendering engine in Quake 1.

Yea thats been out for the Windows Smartphone based phones for a while now (as well as possibly other Cellphone OS's). I personally have Doom 1, Quake 1 and Duke Nukem on my SPV C500 (also known as the Audiovox 5600 or something in the US).

Is this a J2ME or BREW port? What phones is it on?

Sad. Playing Quake on a cell phone is even more ridiculous than playing it on a PDA. Some games were meant to have big screens, big speakers, and keyboards and mice. I would consider phone-Quake more of a chore than a good time. Actually, that's how I feel about 99.9% of phone games.

Yeah and if you try to get it form HANDANGO you just might get Nothing. Not even handango can figure it out - so they forward you to the developers.

As a recovering Q2 online fanatic (weapons of destruction was my poison) I have to agree that a large screen and dedicated controls are the only way to play these FPS titles.
It's gotta be something like the PSP, ZOD, or (hmm) Gizmondo.
And wireless, don't forget the wireless!
